Keep in mind, as soon as that's offered, if it is offered, that's the time buy from a store a Lion installed Mac. That way, in event you have Lion compatible software which hasn't been tested with Mountain Lion, at least you'll have the option to stick with Lion until Mountain Lion is ready for you. So keep your eye on http://www.apple.com/pr and http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/ once summer begins. Apple has offered up to date programs for a long time, typically up to three weeks prior to the release date, and given you a chance to know when the release date is. If you order online though, and they are out of stock, you may be stuck with a Mountain Lion only compatible machine. An authorized Apple retailer should be able to carry at least some models through http://www.apple.com/buy/ so check their stock at that time for what you desire.

After upgrading to Mac OS X Lion, Like KTGHowie stated Mac OS X Mountain Lion is only a one time purchase fee of $19.99. Mountain Lion will be available as a single software upgrade via the Mac App Store beginning in July 2012. The BEST PART is you only have to purchase it one time to upgrade all of your Macs,

Why would anyone think it's free? Apple clearly states that it's $19.99. The only people who are entitled to a free copy are those who bought a Mac during a specified amount of time, which is clearly stated on their website. Not to be rude, but it amazes me how many people never read details about software before purchasing it. It's almost laughable to read reviews of Mountain Lion on the App Store by people who complain about not being able to use Air Play to an Apple TV. They didn't read the system requirements, and they don't take the time to read and understand why it's not supported on Macs that were older than early/mid 2011. It's a hardware thing. Had Apple allowed Airplay to run on Macs without H.264 capable video cards, the reviews about Airplay would have been much worse. The heat produced by their Macs would have been even more annoying than not being able to use Airplay. Apple cares a lot about user experience, and I appreciate that a lot. If this was Microsoft, they would have made Airplay possible, but people with older systems would have hated it.
