How do I create a mailing list (group) of colleagues to whom I send a common email every week? I've tried Help topics in Mail and on th apple site, to no avail.

Any guidance gratefully received.

Followup question...

I have successfully created a mailing list, but I have several individual contacts for whom I have multiple email addresses. When I compose a message to my 'group mailing list', it pulls one email address per contact. In some cases, the addresses it pulls is not the one I want to use for the list. How do I select a 'primary' email address for a list for those contacts who have several addresses?

Thank you.

AAAAARGH! Still stuck:

I created the list of recipients in Address book, confirmed all email addresses were in bold in the "distribution" list, created a new email, typed the first letters of the group, got the full name, but when I type RETURN or TAB, the name clears and the address field is blank.

I had created a group of names previously in Snow Leopard (I'm now on Lion), and if I type the first letters of the group and RETURN, it works.

If I type only two letters, i get a pop-down list of possibles. When I mouse over other groups I see the mouse pointer. When I mouse over the new group, it turns to the "type insertion" vertical bar. So it's different somehow. If I use the down arrow key to step to the new group and press return, the address filed becomes blank.

Wassup?

How did you create the list in Address Book? Did you create a group and add the people to the group?

And what distribution list are you referring to?

Léonie's instructions were pretty clear. If I follow them I can e-mail to a group of people.

Frank,

I selected File> New group. Then with the list of groups in the left pane, selected ALL group, and dragged names from the right pane to the name of the new Group. The mouse pointer changed to a vCard icon. When I click on the group name in the left column, the correct list of recipients appears in the right pane.

To verify that names are all valid I selected EDIT>Distribution list... A new window with 2 panes opens up. The left pane contains the list of groups click on ione group and the right pane shows the list of names and addresses. If the names are in bold, then they are correctly in the list wihout any address errors (it says at the bottom of the new window.)

Yes, Léonie's instructions were clear. THe new group behaves correctly in the address book and in the distribution list window. Yet it misbehaves in Mail. The steps are few and simple, so I can't figure out what's wrong.

Now I get the same symptoms 😠, but I found a work around for the groups that wan't work when entered in Mail's address field:

  • Select the group you want to send email to in Address Book
  • Ctrl-click the group name
  • Select "Send email to ..." from the pop-up menu.

This will open an email form with the correct address list, at least on my Mac;

Added: editing the distribution list is disabled, if you are using iCloud; see this:

Having been a huge Apple fan since the pre-Mac days of the early 80s, I am constantly mystified how they get away with a Mail program that ***** so stinkin' hard. I am thwarted by the simplest things, such as creating a mailing list from an email I received with a perfectly grouped "To:" field. Why can't I Select All and drag that into a new group? I am seriously supposed to individually add 80 addresses that I already have conveniently grouped together? I can't even copy and paste them as a group. ***? I have now wasted twenty minutes searching the net for an answer to something that should have been intuitively answered in twenty seconds for someone like me who has been using Macs since 1985.

How do I create a mailing list (group) of colleagues to whom I send a common email every week?
