is it possible to use GPS on tethered iphone to use Navigation app on iPad?

I'm thinking of getting a new iPad, but don't want to get a 4G version and data plan as I already have that on my iPhone 4, and don't want to duplicate the costs unnecessarily. However, I want to use a marine navigation app on the iPad due to the bigger screen. Is it possible to use the GPS signal on the iPhone, when tethered to the iPad, to use the Navigation app on the ipad?

No, although you could tether your iPad to iPhone (with an additional plan) that's only internet access and won't transfer the iPhone's GPS data to your iPad.

You might consider an LTE-capable iPad but not activate the cellular service until you need it, which is a month-to-month plan that can be suspended right from the iPad. Just note that to get GPS on the iPad you have to activate the cellular service. Also, note that the iPad plan is probably about the same as a tethering plan for your iPhone, and I think the tethering plan is not month-to-month.

I didn't know these things existed, but there are GPS devices that plug into a wi-fi only iOS device, so no need to tether to an iPhone. See this thread:

However, unless your Navigation app has the maps actually loaded onto your iPad, you'd need internet access if the maps need to come over the air.

Yes, it is possible to use the GPS signal on the iPhone 4, when tethered to the wi-fi only iPad, to use navigation apps on the iPad. I have tested this with the navigation apps Gaia GPS and Mud Map HD, and both show current location with GPS co-ordinates on the iPad, that originate through the iPhone GPS unit via the personal hot spot on the iPhone. Both these navigation apps have downloadable map content for offline use.

[If you already have an iPhone, you won't need a separate GPS receiver!]

Alternatively, use the 4G iPad without a data plan, and use it solely for the GPS navigation.

🙂
