How can I use stat to view octal file permissions

I've tried to use stat in Terminal to get file permissions in octal notation but the tips I've found online do not work in OS X. It seems that the Mac flavor of stat is slightly different from that used in Linux...

There are a bewildering number of options in stat and I have not been able to find the right mix, help! 😟
