HP Photosmart C4280 shows USB Not Connected Message?

So, I have an HP Photosmart C4280 printer that works fine when I want to print, but when I try to scan with Image Capture here's what happens: I can do an Overview scan, can see the document in the window, but the button to the right of overview does not show "Scan," but a greyed out "Cancel." When I try to manually scan from the printer, an error message pops up in the printer window that says "USB not connected?" I'm pretty sure that the latest drivers are installed. I can't figure out where to go from here?

Here's what I figured out. I don't think the USB cable is the problem because I can print fine from my computer. After doing some snooping on the internet, instead of using the Image Capture app, I tried Preview, which worked, mostly. I can successfully scan documents now, but for some reason Preview crashes when I attempt to convert the document into a PDF (through the "Print" option)? Anyway, I think this is a software issue: either Apple's or HP's. I was able to scan documents fine before Lion. Odd that I couldn't find anything in the Apple Forums on this issue?

When you do the Overview, are you able to select a portion of the image that appears. And if so, does the Scan button then become available?

One thing that has changed with Lion's Image Capture is that the Custom Size setting is enabled by default. This forces the user to select a portion of the overviewed image. If you untick the "Use Custom Size" setting in the Show Details view, you should find that the Scan button becomes available.
