Is my iPhone 4S, now 4G capable?

After updating my iPhone 4S to the new IOS 5.1, my phone now says "AT&T 4G" does this mean the iPhone is now 4G capable or just that my service is 4G, but my phone is still just 3G?

Your phone's capabilities have not changed - just AT&T's definition of what constitutes a "4G" network.

Like JC83 above, I use speedtest often on my Iphone 4. A friend of mine bought a new Iphone 4S 4/1/2012. She showed me that it had "4G" in the service area of the screen. I wanted to find out if there was a difference in our download speed. So we downloaded speedtest to her phone and ran the app at the same time on my phone and her phone. My phone, of course, has 3G and my download speed was about 150Kbytes/sec her 4G download speed was about 500Kbytes/sec. So again I agree with JC83, the network speeds have increased.

Now I am stuck wanting 4G download speeds but waiting for the Iphone 5. I guess I will wait for the 5.

I also noticed the change on my IPhone 4s from 3G to 4G as for browsing capability I'll let you answer this, before the update I did a speed test which you can download from the app store free I was hitting just about 3-5mbps download speed after updating to ios 6.0 I topped it at 26.01mbps. Explain how? The phone was 4G capable the whole time and the update unlocked the band so it can utilize and download at 4G speed. Here is the name of the application it's free and 99% accurate speedtest.net by ookia. Hope this helps !
