1080p Apple TV

I just hooked up my new 1080p AppleTV, which replaced my Apple TV2. However, when I go to settings and look at the video resolution menu, the highest resolution I see is 720p. My TV says it's receiving 720p, just like my old Apple TV2. Where do I set the new Apple TV to 1080p? I have a DVD player which outputs 1080p, and my TV shows 1080p for that device.

Apparently, the Apple TV3 must be plugged directly into the TV to get 1080p. Mine was plugged into a receiver and would not go above 720p. When I plugged it directly into my TV, 1080p appeared immediately. That's too bad because I have 4 HDMI sources plugged in through my receiver. I guess I will have to return my ATV3.

I was routing through an HDMI switcher and getting 720P. I routed directly to the TV and was still only getting 720P. My TV is an XBR1 and is limited to 1080i. Is that why Apple TV is dropping to 720P? If so that is riddiculous as everything else I have will change from 1080P to the 1080i that the TV limits. I'm very disappointed. This one will be going back as I already have a 720P.

Check the Audio/Video settings in ATV3 and check the iTunes Store settings in ATV3. Both should be for 1080p. But as you discovered, you should make sure your equipment also supports 1080p. AppleTV3 can't display 1080p when your equipment doesn't support it.

To the original poster, you discovered that your receiver only supports 720p through HDMI. Time to buy a new receiver if you want the receiver to handle the HDMI.

To koacub, if your old Sony XBR1 only supports 720p or 1080i, why did you buy an ATV3? You discovered that your HDMI switcher only supports 720p as well. This is not Apple's issue when you don't have the proper equipment. The ATV3 fully supports 720p, and under Audio/Video, you can set the video to automatically detect the maximum resolution supported for your TV. Apple never dropped 720p, it is still an available option for those that don't have a 1080p HDTV. Don't complain about the ATV3 when you don't have the AV gear to support it.

Peter Hillman - Take a nother look at my post. I didn't say my HDMI switch would not support 1080p. It does. I followed a recommendation in the post. Don't try to insinuate that I'm stupid either. I think it is stupid that Apple doesn't support all resolutions as does Roku, Sony, LG and most other players on the market. I'm saying to do that without advertising your specs is not right. Don't chastise me for buying ATV3 since NO ONE knew that it would not support all resolutions between 480p and 1080p. I'm no idiot. So check your attitude!
