Updating Epson Stylus C88

Whenever there is a software driver update via Apple for my Epson printer, I always update it. But, is it normal for one to delete and readd the printer to use the new driver? I notice my system says it's the old driver until I delete and readd..

For the new driver to be listed in the printer utility in System Preferences correctly, I have to delete and re-add the printer. Then the correct driver shows. For example, I do a successful update via Software Update from Apple, I note my C88 plus printer was using driver version 8.61. After the update, I opened the Printer System prefrence, then the Print Que, then the utility which shows printer driver version and it still says 8.61. I have to delete and then readd to have the correct 8.67 listed. It may be using the new one, but the driver is listed wrong until I go through that process. Using the same printer on two different MBP's, I see the same behavior on both.

I installed the latest update two days ago, and the version number is correct (8.67). I don't recall if I restarted since updating -- I may have, and it may be the explanation. AFAICT, the old driver components are overwritten or deleted, so I don't see how it could continue to use the old version after updating.
