I think my iMac blew up

I just want to know if anyone else has experienced this, and what I could be expecting.

2 days ago, I was sitting at my imac (2007 intel white) and it suddenly just made a POP sound... like a balloon poped inside it.

The computer instantly shut off, and wouldn't restart.

I've taken it to a place called "Mac Outpost" here in my home town of London Ontairo (we're still a few months away from opening it's first Apple Store) and I had to pay $80 just for them to look at it. I won't get an answer until likely late tomorrow (they said 24-48 hours).

They told me it could be something as simple as a few key strokes to re-set it, or it could be something in the power supply... in which case I could be looking at 2-4 hundred dollars to fix or replace. Considering the POP sound it made.... I'm expecting the worst.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced this, and what thier situation was.

I guess I'm just ancy and I want to know the worst case scenerio.

Those capacitors that look like little metal cans ( called electrolytic capacitors because the can is filled with liquid electrolyte) can sometimes make a pop sound when the fail. It can be really loud. It the failed component is obvious, and the specs can be read off the old part, the fix is straightforward and could be done by any technician.

If they need to do a fault isolation and replace genuine Apple parts, it could be just as the suggested, several hundred dollars.

Wow.... I might as well just get another computer at that point. Probably cheaper just to have them transfer the files over.

I'm hoping for the best, but expecting the worst.

Thanks for the replies tho!

This couldn't have happened at a worse time. If it is "hundreds" of dollars, I won't be able to afford to get it fixed and will just have to bring it home. At which point I'll have to just wait a couple of months until I can figure out what to do and what I can afford.
