Using Apple TV with a receiver and getting 1080p

Two questions:

First, does Apple TV 3 go on sale in stores today? I'm hoping to pick one up if they are avaiable.

Second, I read in the discussion below (see link) that you can't route your Apple TV through a receiver and get 1080p. Is this universally true for all receivers? If so, that's a major problem for me -- maybe a deal killer. Has anyone else routed their Apple TV 3 through the a receiver and gotten 1080p on their TV?

Rudegar,

No, this is for both audio and video using HDMI. I have HDMI inputs on the back of the receiver that I use for both my current Apple TV2 and Blu-Ray player. The receiver takes the audio and outputs it to my surround sound speakers and passes the video out to my TV through another HDMI cable.

In the link that I provided above, some people were saying that when they route their Apple TV video through the receiver, it shows up as 720 instead of 1080. What I wanted to know is if that is true for everyone who rountes their Apple TV3 through a receiver.

I haven't unpacked my new Apple TV yet, so I'm unable to verify this at this time. However it seems extremely unlikely that the Apple TV will be restricted to 720p because it is connected to the receiver.

A receiver only passes the HDMI signal between the Apple TV on the TV itself. If the person in the other thread you referred to has had difficulty connecting his receiver and obtaining 1080p, then I can only think that it is a restriction of their specific receiver.
I will of course be testing this myself later, but it may be much later since it's now Friday teatime here, and I'll shortly be getting ready for the Jolly boys outing on a Friday night.

I've read many posts with people having compatibility issues with various hdmi switchs but not related to resolution

more it being hdcp issues and general incompatibility so it didn't work at all

is it because your tv only have 1 hdmi port?

mine have 4 so my receiver is only for audio even if it does have hdmi but limited to 1080i but thats a limitation of the sony receiver

Apple would have had to seriously botch their HDMI implementation for that to be true. As for the thread you cited, it's possible there is some EDID issue, which is fairly common with older equipment. In HTPC circles, Onkyo receivers are pretty notorious for causing problems when people hook video cards up to them, though I don't remember reading that loss of 1080p was one of them. In any case, you shouldn't generalize the conclusion of the OP in that thread to "all receivers". I expect the problem he's having is not universal but unique to him, and possibly others with the same equipment, assuming he didn't simply make a mistake. Sadly, he didn't list either his receiver or his TV, which are the two pieces of information useful to everyone reading it, so you should ask about that before worrying about it.

That was my post that you linked to. I was just about to post an update. It turns out that it was NOT the receiver causing the problem, but a splitter and HDMI-to-composite converter circuit. When I removed the HDMI connection from that circuit and routed from the Apple TV to the receiver, then from the receiver to my HDTV, the 1080p came through just fine. That was a big relief to me, and I'm sure to you also.

Lawrence,

I'm the original poster. Today I purchased my Apple TV and hooked it up through my Onkyo receiver without a problem -- I instantly got 1080p.

I don't know why some are having this problem, but I have a shot-in-the-dark type suggestion to try.

I noticed when I was setting up my device that there's an option to set your resolution. It's on "auto" by default. Changing this may (or may not) help your situation. Again, this is just a shot in the dark, but worth trying.

Under the "Settings" menu, go to "Audio & Video." From there, select "TV Resolution." By default, this is set at "Auto." Try selecting "TV Resolution" and then picking the 1080p HD version that matches your TV.

Let us know if this works.

Thanks so much for your reply...when I check the settings....I deselect 'Auto' but the only choices I have start with 720p....there are no 1080p choices...I guess it is a compatibility issue with my Pioneer Elite receiver....hard for me to believe Apple would implement something with this issue. My older Vudu Box, BluRay and Directv HD DVR all work fine outputting to 1080p (in fact my TV, a Pioneer Elite Plasma can accept 20Hz video, not just 60 Hz, and my receiver can output 20 Hz....so why would the Apple product have this issue...I am an Apple fanatic and love their products...but this one has me stumped.

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my issue....glad yours is working...
