I'm running an iPad (3rd Gen) set up as a new iPad. I didn't use a cloud backup of my iPad 2 to restore since I wanted to start cruft-free again. The cover setting is there for me in SETTINGS-> GENERAL under the passcode lock options: and it seems to be working fine. Switches the display off when I close the Smart Cover, reawakens it when I open it. The cover, as far as I'm aware, only bypasses the need for the "swipe to unlock" step meaning as you close and open the cover it appears it's not doing anything unless you have a passcode lock active, in which case you have to re-enter this if it's within the timeframe set in the settings. Otherwise it's exactly the same as pressing the top button to put it sleep, then again to wake it (without the swipe option).

Those for whom the cover isn't working, can you tell us:

1) is it a genuine smart cover?

2) if you close the cover then lift the middle of the cover by 'tenting' it slightly, what's on your display? If you lift the right hand edge, obviously this breaks the connection and fires up the display again.

Troopa,

Hmmmm........weird. So your display just doesn't switch off at all? That's just weird. I know my questions and answer may have seemed like teaching a grandmother to suck eggs, but I do know of someone who thought their cover wasn't working cos the screen was live when they closed it and live when they opened it. It took a few whacks about thte head to fix that one.

What happens if you set a passcode lock, set to 'require immediately'? I'll assume nothing does, but I'll ask anyway.
