Is anybody else getting a yellowish hue on their new iPad?

Hi guys, i need your help. I just got my new iPad today 4G+Wifi 64GB (white) and i am getting a distinct yellowish hue on my retina display. On my iPad 2 it is clearly much nicer and brighter in terms of the resolution. I was making the two comparisons by using safari and just opening up a blank white page with the brightness tuned to the max on both, i could tell the new iPad is yellowish and the iPad 2 is white and crisp. I mean is apple kidding me? Retina display with more pixels results in yellowish crappy resolution than my iPad 2? Im not sure if i should return this junk back to the apple store or if they do replace me will they give me back the same crappy display. I am stuck in a middle right now as my authorised reseller is currently out of stock and when i called apple support today they were telling me i would have to wait much longer if they have to ship it back to me. This is really ridiculous and i hope if anyone shares the same problem do drop me a reply.

Thanks.

My 5 is mostly even. I've seen the color change as a minor on my iPhone 4 and less on the 4S. But my two 5 models don't have this. Switch it out if it's bad enough. Just remember it's apples quality control you're dealing with. New one could be worse or have more issues. Get an advance replacement if you can. Then you don't switch to a worse unit.

I'm keeping an iPad 3 as I'm done with the new apple stuff for a while, if not entirely. Only bought the 5 because I needed to dump AT&T as I've never had worse service in my life.

Unfortunately, I also have the yellow+blue problem (1/8 of the screen is unnoticably yellower and then suddenly cold blue on the edges). Has anybody ever seen an improvement with the blues just by waiting? I've read (in this thread too) that some screens tend to get better about the yellows after a week or so but in my case, it's not the yellows but rather a blue shadow on one edge which is the problem. Has anybody seen an improvement in this matter as well after a few days? I ony have my iPad for 3 days so I don't know if I should already make a fuss about it or just wait a couple more days as it may settle down.

I went through a number of iPad 3s with various screen flaws. I kept each of them for an average of two weeks. Over that time, I never saw a single improvement on any of the screens. You may get used to the blueness, but I sincerely doubt that you'll ever see it go away.

I have seen quite a few that were partial yellow and partially some other color. None of them got better. I don't think that there's any "settling down" for screen flaws. At least in my experience.

My advice? Keep it until right before your return window expires. If you can live with it, live with it. If not, take it back and get another one. You'll eventually either find one that's perfect, one you can live with, or you'll get so sick of trying that you'll just wait until the iPad 5 (or whatever they end up calling it). Rumor has it that there's going to be a new screen technology in use on those. Maybe that will be the end of these stupid issues.

The thing is, once you've experienced the retina screen, it's tough to go back to non-retina. At least it was for me. I settled on an iPad 3 that was mostly flawless. The backlighting is slightly uneven on the top left of the screen. But other than that, it's good. And now I rarely notice it. I gave passing thought to perhaps getting an iPad 4, and selling my iPad 3. But when it became apparent that the screens on the iPad 4 were having the same issues as I saw on the iPad 3, I decided to just wait it out for the next iteration.

Thank you a lot for your response. Then I'll try to wait a while and then decide - what worries me, though, is that from what I read on some forums, since I haven't bought my device at Apple Online Store, I'm not eligible for the regular fast replacement and would have to contact the shop instead which (in my country, at least) works in such a way that I have to inform them about my will to return the item to them within 10 days after purchase, then send it to them within 14 days and after that they have another 14 days to give me refund and then I have to place a new order as if I were buying a new device so it's rather a return than replacement.

The very thought of repeating such process multiple times in case I don't hit the jackpot on the first try and get something even worse gives me shivers...

Hi, thought I would give you my 2 cents worth also. I got the iPad 3 on launch day. The screen was so horrible it took my breath away. Pink and green and gray and yellow, take your pick, cuz all the colors were there. I returned it to Apple after 4 days and reading so many similar complaints. I made the decision to wait a couple of months before trying again and am glad I did because people were going through multiple returns

At the beginning of June, I tried again, but this time at Best Buy and not through Apple online. (The nearest Apple retail store is two hours away so that wasn't even an option). This iPad 3 is stellar. The whites are white, it is clear and bright, no discoloration or backlighting at all.

I agree with Usmaak. I wouldn't give up this perfect iPad for a 4, and even if the 5 is a wonder, I will wait at least 3 months to see how it is playing out. Like you, the stress of multiple returns and disappointments is not for me. Best of luck with whatever you decide to do.

Thanks. I guess I'll call Apple on monday and see what options they see (particularly: how long a replacement may take on average). If the estimated time for a replacement turns out to be less than a week, I think I may give it a shot but otherwise... I think I'd pass as I'd rather cope with one blue-ish edge and play with the actual iPad than go into infinite replacement loop and play with... Well... Imaginary iPad.

The good news is eventually I got a nearly perfect ipad 4 after a painful and tedious exchange and return process. The bad news is that it is the only ipad I found without noticeable problem within around 2 dozens I purposely checked, which including 2 ipad 2 I had. It looked like ipad 2 and 3 had more troubles. If you can tell the problem with your eyes, unlike at least 99% all other not, you should not give up another try. Surprisingly most people can live with that, even Apple itself. But I am really angry at it.

Dec 22, 2012 6:21 PM in response to Clavichord

It took me somewhere around 12 iPad 3s to get one that was nearly perfect. It was worth it when I finally got my iPad 3 that I kept. But what a nightmare it was to get to where I am now. Before the iPad 3, I had (still have) an iPad 2 that was 100 percent perfect. No noticable screen flaws that I could see. It has a perfectly uniform screen. My wife also has an iPad 3, and her screen has uneven backlighting. It's darker on the left side. She sees it, but doesn't care.

I'm not sure what the deal is with these screens on the iPad 3 and 4. It seems like there are so many flaws. I hope the next generation uses the Sharp IGZO screen that I keep hearing about, and I hope that the flaws go away. Until that time, I'm holding on tight to my current iPad 3. I don't want to go through the repetitive exchange process ever again.

Dec 23, 2012 4:49 AM in response to Clavichord

2 dozens in one case, 12 iPads in another? Oh boy... How long did one full exchange process take in your case, Clavichord and Usmaak? The thing I'm most afraid of is that I'm going to have my money frozen and I'll be both without the money I spent for the device AND the actual device for God-knows-how-long and when I actually get a bearable one I'm just going to lose all the excitement I now feel over it.

Oh man, tough choices - the screen is perfect on most colours - weren't it for this one cold edge, it would have been perfect. By the way - it seems the opposite edge became normal or (which may also be the case) I'm experiencing some heavy placebo. I asked other people who saw the device on the first day too and they agreed that only one edge is left with this weird colouring but maybe that's also some group-placebo 🙂 Like I said, guess I'll give Apple a call tomorrow anyway.

Well, I live in the states, so I have Target, Best Buy, and the Apple Store. I just went from store to store, and alternated purchases. I imagine that it would be more difficult for someone living somewhere without ready access to stores that have the iPad.

Best Buy has a 60 day return policy, Target has 45. I usually avoid the Apple store, because of their ultra lame 14 day return policy.

Dec 24, 2012 4:51 AM in response to Usmaak

Oh, I have plenty of stores with iPads - by the "other country" thing I just wanted to emphasize that the return/warranty policy doesn't necessarily work the same way here so I may have different options at hand 🙂

I guess I'll try to take the return-buy_once_again too, after all. Getting the replacement seems to both take longer (30 days in my country) and you get a refurbished unit (which, from what I read, are never perfect and you have much higher probability of hitting the jackpot with a brand new unit).

Dec 24, 2012 7:52 AM in response to Tigro!

Tigro, I 'checked' around 2 dozens, which also included display units in stores. I did several return and exchange in Bestbuy, Microcenter, Apple etc. And eventually I was not allowed to do any further in Bestbuy for at least 3 months. So be aware.

A guy in Bestbuy did tell me what they thought: Apple was cheap, it did not do alignment for its screen panel as it should. I guess it could explain at least a little for light leak. Two ipad 2 I owned both had light leakage at one corner. But when I twist the ipad a little (not too much force!) it disappeared.

Is anybody else getting a yellowish hue on their new iPad?
