Q: Is anybody else getting a yellowish hue on their new iPad?

Hi guys, i need your help. I just got my new iPad today 4G+Wifi 64GB (white) and i am getting a distinct yellowish hue on my retina display. On my iPad 2 it is clearly much nicer and brighter in terms of the resolution. I was making the two comparisons by using safari and just opening up a blank white page with the brightness tuned to the max on both, i could tell the new iPad is yellowish and the iPad 2 is white and crisp. I mean is apple kidding me? Retina display with more pixels results in yellowish crappy resolution than my iPad 2? Im not sure if i should return this junk back to the apple store or if they do replace me will they give me back the same crappy display. I am stuck in a middle right now as my authorised reseller is currently out of stock and when i called apple support today they were telling me i would have to wait much longer if they have to ship it back to me. This is really ridiculous and i hope if anyone shares the same problem do drop me a reply.

Thanks.

When I took my iPad back to an Apple Store for purposes of comparison with demo models (to check for yellow hue), I set both iPads to the same (maximum) settings, with Auto Brightness on and off. Did it with several iPads, and mine was really visibly yellow in comparison.

I went to the store to do the comparison because the yellow was really obvious to me (sold my iPad 2 on eBay so didn't have it around for comparison). Now, two days later, having left the screen on, running for a couple of days nearly all the time (except at night), I believe that the obvious yellow tint isn't there any more, or at worst it is hardly noticeable. So I don't know if it is glue drying or the pixels maturing or what, but I really have no complaint any more. Anybody else noticing that it does indeed seem to go away?

Just for the record, I have a 64GB 4G with the overall warmer, yellow cast. I left it plugged in and running all day and night yesterday to see whether it would get whiter. No luck, so far.

UH oh, it's déjà vu all over again.  When I got my iPad 2, the white was noticeably yellower than my iPad 1.  Hated it.  I cranked the brightness to max and let it run for a couple days continuously. No help.  I took it to the store to compare to the other iPad 2s, and yes it did look yellower.  I exchanged it.

MY suggestion: take it to the store and compare side by side with other iPad 3..  Regardless, if you are unable, return it.

Mine had a yellowish hue running down the left hand side (when held in portrait) but after a few days it's now hardly noticeable. I expect it to disappear totally within another few days.

The exact same thing happened with my iPhone 4, and 4S, and iPad 2. The glue used to fix the pixel array to the glass screen had not fully cured as they were shipped literally within hours of rolling off the production line. One of the drawbacks of having the world's slickest supply chain I guess.  When the iPhone 4 launched it was widely reported.  Now it happens every time an iOS device is launched.

These things come with warranties, right? If it really concerns you that much, just contact the retailer. Otherwise, give it a week or so under normal use to see if it goes away.

The display of my iPad is also yellow (upper third).

I turned the auto-brightness off on my new iPad and it took care of the pale yellowish hue.  I also called Apple Tech Support and was told that there hadn't been many reports at all about this issue.  The rep I spoke with didn't know what I was talking about.  She hadn't had any complaints today about the yellow color.

I measured both displays using the DTP94 and the ipad3 shows more red than the ipad2.

    martyfromtx:

Perhaps people are complaining in this thread, but not directly to Apple Tech Support. Here is the iPad feedback link:

Same with mine as reported previously in this thread.

However I do have good news.  My replacement came via FedEx this morning and the display is absolutely perfect.  I'm really glad that I opted for replacement rather than refund.

mangoesbananas, I have the same issue and suspect that we both have defective screens. Unclicked links (which should be blue) look like they're purple. It's definitely not a matter of not being used to the screen as you suggest, Ctein. It's not just a deeper blue; it's definitely a shift from blue to purple.

Yellows are off for me too.  An image like this (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/94/Auto_Racing_Yellow.svg/ 800px-Auto_Racing_Yellow.svg.png) is much greener on my new iPad than on my iPad 2, my iPhone 4, or my 13" MacBook Pro.

Beyond those two color calibration-type issues, there's a lack of color temperature uniformity on the left-hand side (when held in portrait orientation). Whites on the top and bottom of that side appear more yellow, whereas the center is cooler. I suspect that's an issue with the backlighting LEDs.

So...my unscientific corroboration of your more pronounced red measurement...

I have the NY Post App which is a local NYC Newspaper...the screen upon launch of the app is red...boy is it a nice much deeper red on the third gen iPad when compared to seeing it on my old iPad 2....

Netflix is super red but the overall hue of whites leans to a very light red as well on mine.

I just posted this on Apple's iPad feedback form. Figured it can't hurt:

I pre-ordered a new iPad (with retina display) and picked it up the day they released. I am sorry to say that I've been extremely disappointed with the color quality on my new iPad, and see this as a major defect with the device.

I own an iPad 2 and an iPhone 4S, and use both daily. When picking up the new iPad and using familiar apps (Messages, Mail, Notes, Calendar), the new iPad makes them look completely different. Colors are washed out, less vibrant. However, greens are ridiculously neon. Yellows are flat, almost gray. Whites and grays are yellow in tint. These color "issues" are apparent with the new iPad is viewed alone. Comparison with previous devices is not necessary.

This is not just a slight discrepancy in color, but a lack of brand consistency. These apps (and their respective icons) carry their own brand, and the new iPad's colors fail to live up to the quality I would have expected. (at least the one that I bought). And considering this is the primary new feature of the iPad, I'm pretty disappointed that Apple's quality control let this problem slip through the cracks.

I'll be returning the iPad to my local Apple store in the hope that I can get my hands on another with a better display.

For those of you on the community, I thought I'd share this image with you. The color difference is not due to "glue"… It's a completely different color profile:
