Q: Is anybody else getting a yellowish hue on their new iPad?

Hi guys, i need your help. I just got my new iPad today 4G+Wifi 64GB (white) and i am getting a distinct yellowish hue on my retina display. On my iPad 2 it is clearly much nicer and brighter in terms of the resolution. I was making the two comparisons by using safari and just opening up a blank white page with the brightness tuned to the max on both, i could tell the new iPad is yellowish and the iPad 2 is white and crisp. I mean is apple kidding me? Retina display with more pixels results in yellowish crappy resolution than my iPad 2? Im not sure if i should return this junk back to the apple store or if they do replace me will they give me back the same crappy display. I am stuck in a middle right now as my authorised reseller is currently out of stock and when i called apple support today they were telling me i would have to wait much longer if they have to ship it back to me. This is really ridiculous and i hope if anyone shares the same problem do drop me a reply.

    My screen is disinctly yellow, very warm on white, browns look green, people look jaundiced, etc. a week of heavy use and no improvement.

     

    Went to apple store they switched it out, no questions, new iPad had same issue, this time they started giving all sorts of excuses, e.g. down to component manufacturer so it was all down to the luck of the draw and I'd just have to live with it, etc.

     

    So I've thought about it and I'm not going to live with it, it goes back tonight and perhaps I'll revist it a few months when they've got the issues sorted.

     

    As I pointed out to the Apple people  they shouldn't be surpised that if the USP for the new iPad is it's screen and it fails to deliver due to inconsistent m/f issues then they'll need to suck up the cost of a high level of returns and customer dissastifaction.

    I'm unsubscribing to this thread and going back to my iPad 2(which has loads of light leak but the screen always looks uniform). I'm on my second new iPad and the top right in the pictures I'm about to upload is what is bothering me (not the yellow near the bottom in one), or the bottom right in landscape (button on left) its not noticeable really with any color except white but white is on my screen 70+ percent of the time with mail, safari, and flipboard some of my most used apps.

    It can't be that I'm to picky because this is the iPad 2 that I only ever notice on few occasions in Netflix but the whites are all uniform on the screen and in safari.

     

    iPad 2 that colors look uniform on(even though I do see the richer new iPad colors):

    • I've been left iPad swiched on all the time (Auto-Lock: Never) with white screen and full brightness (Auto-Brightness: Off) and thrown to the draw for better warmth incubation.
    • iPad is getting 36°C/96.8°F and burning this alleged "glue".
    • 16h ahead and it's getting better - yellow tint slightly reduced and dead-pixel showed up .
    • I'm going to continue the process until the end - yellow tint, mine or iPad I have nothing to lose.
    • I will publish effects tommarow or at the weekend.

    I just want to report that I went to get my iPad changed and the new one is great. It's a little warmer than my calibrated monitors ( as expected ), but nowhere near as yellow. The grays look good. In fact, I can get the same look as my "defective" iPad by looking at the new one at an extreme viewing angle ... meaning, looking at my first "yellow" iPad straight on looks like my new one at a 70 deg angle. ( If that makes any sense )

     

    I was nervous because it's really hard to make a color argument at the store. All the iPads looked okay ( even the one I was exchanging ) in there. The apple store lighting favored iPads. The genius and his second opinion did not think there was anythign wrong with my screen, but the policy is that if you are not happy, you get to exchange it, so I gave it a shot and it paid off.

    A. We're very sorry, we'll replace it immediately (with another one with the same fault but we hope you don't notice)

    D. Come back tomorrow with all the packaging and we'll give you a full refund.

    Sorry, trick question it's actually all of the above, I've had all of the above responses in the last 24 hours and 2 visits to the Apple store.

    If they had told me something like some of these were I would have been on the phone to Apple Customer Service with store names, and employee names To tell then how I was treated!

    Good idea, unfortunately I was so furious of basicly being told that what I was telling them of the previous days experience was not the truth. That I gave them the iPad (packiging and all), the receipt and my contact details and told them to sort it out and left.

     

    I figured the potential loss of £500 device was infinitely cheaper than facing a potential court action resulting from the loss of my temper had I faced this any longer.

    @ tomartint If what you say is true then it's outrageous. In all my years of visiting Apple Stores I've never been treated like that! I think you should take this up strongly!

    Enough is enough! Yellow hue on a part of the screen + 3 stuck pixels + backlight bleeding + dust caught inside the screen!!!!!

     

     

    Called Apple....

    What was the problem when you were told A), you'd get an a new one immediately? If you already thought the next one you woulld get woul be faulty, then why were you in the store? To get your iPad repaired?

     

    What was the problem with D)? You thought you could just bring in the naked iPad for an exchange/refund?

     

    What does E) have to do with anything? You can have an exchange you iPad for a new iPad or a refund, and in fact you chose the latter. Care to clarify? Were you led to believe you coudn't return your iPad for a refund?

     

    You didn't like your iPad, you didn't believe another one would do the job, you were told to come back with your iPad and it's packaging for a refund, and that's exactly what you did. Are you claiming you couldn't get a refund when you brought your iPad back to the Apple store on your next trip there?

    So I had my appointment with the genius.  He noticed the yellow tint and the non-uniformity in the screen's overall tone but said it was within spec.  Ridiculous.  Nonetheless, he offered to exchange it one more time for the yellow-screen issue.  I'm glad I took the risk because the new one is perfect.  No yellow tint (if it's there, it's uniform and I don't notice it), fairly unoticeable backlight bleed, no dead pixels, no noticeable dust particles.  I'm very happy now.  Good iPads are out there, you just have to find them.

    I bought both the Verizon and the AT&T iPads, resolving to return one when I figured out which one I wanted. The Verizon one is yellowish. The AT&T one is bright white, just gorgeous.

     

    I exchanged the Verizon one -- same problem.

     

    I don't want to take a risk of ending up with a yellowish one. It may get better, or you may just get used to it. I have had it for a week and have been using it, but there is no lessening of the yellow tint.

     

    I have to return one of them w/i the 2-week window, so I guess I'll return the Verizon one (yellow) and keep the AT&T one (not yellow).

    I noticed the issue on the 16th when I received it, as suggested in this forum I waited a week and half to see if it would fade with use but it didn't. I went to the store to see if there was a fix and failing that if they could replace it.

     

    The first assistant acknowledged the problem straight away after showing it to them and replaced it there and then, so good so far. As I'd come a long way to get to the store I thought it prudent to check the new one before I left which I did and it had the same issue (ran identical tests).

     

    By this time the original assistant had disappeared, so I had to find another one (originally they said I'd need a new appointment and the next availability was in three days) but eventually got one. This assistant said it was just the way the screen was meant to be and told me to go an look at the iPads on the shop floor, which I did and I found of the 2 iPads I checked one exhibited the same issue and the other was fine.

     

    Returning to the bar, the second assistant had disappeared, eventually found a third assistant who claimed it was down to the component manufacturer (claimed Apple had used several different screen providers), we checked out the 2 remaining stock replacements but they all displayed the same issue. So he said the only alternative was to send it back for a refund. This is what I decided to do but as I had gone in hoping to get a fix or replacement I didn't have the charger/packaging with me, so he gave me his business card and told me to bring it back with the packaging tomorrow and he would sort out the refund.

     

    Up to this point, whilst it was frustrating starting a fresh with each assistant, I at least had a course of action.

    No I brought only the iPad in the hope of a fix or a replacement (see above), and even when we agreed on the refund I was happy to come back the next day with all the packaging, etc.

    So I arrived back the next day with all the necessary items including receipts, etc. I gave the staff the business card I had recieved (on the back of which the previous assistant had written instructions for the iPad to be refunded). They kept me waiting for almost an hour before they came back to me and said that if I wanted a refund, I would have to courier from home to their depot. This clearly was at odds with what the previous assistant had told me, who said I needed to bring it back to the store. When I pointed this out, they went away for another 15 mins and brought back another assistant who repeated the same statement, and asked for the previous day's assitants business card which I handed over, they then disappeared for another 10 minutes before coming back and telling me that the assistant on the business card didn't speak to me the day before as he hadn't been working at the store.They said this in such way as to a make it clear that they thought I was lying.

     

    At this point I'd had enough and rather do something I'd regret leter, I put the iPad down with the original receipt and said it was up to them to sort it out or not as they saw fit and walked out.

     

    I realise that I may never see the iPad or the refund again, but that was a small loss in comparison to having to deal with people like this again.

     

    I have an orignal iPad, 3x iPhones, Macbook Pro, Macbook Air, iMac 27", Time Capsule, etc. over that last few years (not to mention numerous Macs going right back to the original 256k Mac). But this is the first time I've had reason to get support from them (other than over some delivery issues) and it will be the last. As will be this post.

    @ tomartint  It's fine if you don't want to post here anymore but I urge you to not let the matter lie. Not so much about the iPad but abut the way you were treated at the Store - that was quite outrageous! Escalate to someone senior at Customer Support and email Tim Cook as well. If not Tim Cook himself, at least someone on his staff will read the email and know how salespersons at that particular store are behaving.. I am sure some action will be taken. Best wishes!
