Q: Is anybody else getting a yellowish hue on their new iPad?

Hi guys, i need your help. I just got my new iPad today 4G+Wifi 64GB (white) and i am getting a distinct yellowish hue on my retina display. On my iPad 2 it is clearly much nicer and brighter in terms of the resolution. I was making the two comparisons by using safari and just opening up a blank white page with the brightness tuned to the max on both, i could tell the new iPad is yellowish and the iPad 2 is white and crisp. I mean is apple kidding me? Retina display with more pixels results in yellowish crappy resolution than my iPad 2? Im not sure if i should return this junk back to the apple store or if they do replace me will they give me back the same crappy display. I am stuck in a middle right now as my authorised reseller is currently out of stock and when i called apple support today they were telling me i would have to wait much longer if they have to ship it back to me. This is really ridiculous and i hope if anyone shares the same problem do drop me a reply.

Thanks.

No, don't pay any attention to this green tint. This is only white balance adjustments problem from my NEX camera. In fact, the color reproduction is kind of good on the new iPad. Some people find it "too yellow" or "too warm", but it's similar to calibrated panel in my opinion.

The real problem is (lack of) uniformity!

Ok.  I am glad that yours is not that green.  My suggestion if it was would be to RETURN IT!

I went through a bunch of these, and every single one had uniformity issues.  They were all darker on the left side when in portrait orientation.  In addition, some had yellow, some had pink, blue, or green.  Some had darker patches on the top and the bottom as well.  On the bunch that I tried, screen uniformity was terrible across the board.

    Idave,

Being a photographer for sure you know that most people are indifferent to slight colour variations - they don't care and/or they don't notice them. the fact they dont care doesnt mean colour rendering is correct. If you are a good  at what you do (no doubt you are) I am sure that color is an extremely important part of your work and, if that one particular photo of the grey empire state building shows a brownish building your not going to be happy about it, or are you??? The fact that most other people wont care and you do, does not make you irrational or your complaints about the photo  less valid.  I confess I do not understand your point of view on this, i guess i am too obtuse

Majority. You are right, my conclusions are wrong and yours make much more sense.  The new iPad was launched a month ago and you already  find hundreds  ( yes hundreds) of pages on the net referring this issue from all over the world but they are all made by the same 100 people.  Also see point below.

Google. 2 pages!!!L LOL !!!! Must I really do all the work again???!!! Do the research. I've done it already and i really don't want to do it again.  A small hint: Type "new iPad" + "yellow tint" ( include the ")  and select results from the past month - it will give you 28 pages with 10 links each. Then...change tint to hue, then screen then display etc etc etc. Ohhh and these  results are only in the English language, you can make the same query in french, german etc etc As mentioned above it hundreds of pages!!!! On a product that has been launched a month ago!!!!!! These 100 people are really active.

Problem did not go away. Do the research. I made my original post with the best of intentions  for people that have the same problem as me.  If you believe the results great, if not great as well. I have nothing to gain or loose either way!!! The only thing I can say to those that have this problem and have no idea what to think or do is : don't believe everything you read. Do the research on various forums and reach your own conclusions. Two important points:  do not base your conclusions based on the results of only one or two forums and when searching for for answers also look at independent tech forums not only "Apple friendly" ones. FYI most of the people that say the screen became whiter are posting on apple friendly forums. Again, do not believe me do the research for your self.

iPad 2 vs 3. Being a Photographer I am surprised by your comments about the white. It can be do to the poor photo quality . Whites on the new iPad (mine and a most others that i have seen live) are not whiter they are yellower and Grays are brown./taupe. Remaining colors I can live with. It's tough to notice the yellow tint on saturated colors.

Context. If the situation was reversed I would have complained when I bought the iPad 2. As for blue iPad2 you are right, it is too blue, my ipad 3 has the right tint. Ohh wait... my designer's (the guy that has to work with colour 8 hours a day) monitor, my laptop (actually my laptop really is too blue/magenta), my assistant's monitor, my Wifes laptop and my tv all have the wrong tint.  I can test and photograph more screens with the colour chart if you want.

No matter how you look at it some/most new iPads have a yellow tint and render some colors very incorrectly - whites are yellow and grays are taupe/brown. Photos (mine and many others) speak for them selves.

Congruity between ipad 2 and 3 displays. You are right they are two different screens so we cant resume the problem to "the difference between the ipad 2 and 3". That's not the case. the problem is the yellow tint that exists on SOME/most New iPads. There cooler screen new iPads out there are also different from the iPad 2 but the difference is minor and you will not see me complain about them

Stop comparing. The next time you buy a camera that renders bad colors or a lens with too much distortion dont complain or return them. Just stop comparing the photos you take with them with your subjects.  You will never see the difference!!!!

My first time posting here on these forums. I'm also a photographer. I now have 3 new ipad 3's. It took me 8 to get these three. My 16GB black is just about perfect. All seven white 16GB ipads had issues. The two I still have are not anywhere as good as the black one I have. These two white ipads have lower left sides that are darker and yellow/muddy. I did burn them in for a few days on full with a white screenshot and this helped. But still, Apple's quality control is really going down hill. These diplays are a crap shot and Apple is really pulling one over on most of the people who don't know better.

Yea.  The resolution is amazing.  But screen uniformity and colors are all over the place.  I gave up after 8.  Well, maybe.  I got an iPad 2, but I might return it and give the new iPad another try.  Going back to the resolution on the iPad 2 after having various new iPads for a month was pretty tough.

Haven't posted in a bit since returning my yellow on the top one-third, green/pink/grey blotches on the other two-thirds of my new iPad.  But, have been following the thread.

Just a comment:  Watching the Bruins/Caps game and on came the first new iPad commercial I have seen on TV.  The whites on that iPad were pure white, not a trace of warm yellow or blotches to be seen.  This is NOT an imaginary problem, it is very very real!

I just want to know how many people are affected by this issue. When we hear about people exchanging 4-5 ipads in one month , that can only mean there is a large percentage of faulty displays and people either dont know this is NOT how its supposed to look or they are just not complaining.

People with faulty displays should be few and far in between, not exchanging 4 ipads in 1 month and still get a defected one.

Id sell my ipad for a lose and pay extra for a new one but what guarantee do I have the new one wont be as bad as the current one I have

@kingmohd...that is precisely why I chose to just return my new iPad for a refund, and will wait to see if this issue resolves itself this summer.  I don't need the stress of the revolving exchange problem.

"These diplays are a crap shot and Apple is really pulling one over on most of the people who don't know better."

If someone can't see the problem, then it's difficult to understand how there can be a problem.

Most people are not going to notice green-purple-pink-yellow splotches. Most people won't notice a blob of yellow that looks like a coffee stain?

The reality is that there are very few defective new iPads.

To be fair, nobody really has the numbers.  These forums are not an indication of the number of defective or non-defective iPads.  There is no way for anyone to determine how many have been exchanged and returned.  Your saying that there are very few defective new iPads has as much validity as someone saying that there are a lot based on this and other forums.  Unless you have insider information that we have not seen, you have just as much information as everyone else.  Your statement is as much conjecture as everyone else's.

"The reality is that there are very few defective new iPads."  Really? So the people, like myself, who have been through multiple new iPads are hallucinating?  I'm sorry, but it's unacceptable for there to be so many instances of screen issues out there. The fact that a user doesn't notice his or her screen defects does not mean that the screen is not defective. A friend of mine has clearly uneven yellow tinting on his screen and doesn't even notice it.  Apple must know about this problem and is choosing to ignore it and/or stay silent. In fact, when I took my third iPad in for exchange, the genius noticed the uneven yellow tint, went to the back of the store, and then came back and told me that the screen was within spec.  Unbelievable. He went ahead and exchanged it anyway. Luckily my new screen, while very warm, is uniform. There are, however, a few specks of dust underneath the screen that I am happy to live with.

FYI the first two iPads suffered from unacceptable backlight bleed.  I have a hard time believing that most new iPad screens are not defective when so many people are complaining about the same problems.

"So the people, like myself, who have been through multiple new iPads are hallucinating?"

    ADean810.

There are what, 3,000,000 iPads that have been sold, and a few hundred comments on the offical Apple support forum?

And the fact that a user doesn't notice a defect might just mean there is no defect.

"Apple must know about this problem and is choosing to ignore it and/or stay silent."

If it's not a huge problem, then perhaps there's no reason for Apple to do anything, other than to offer returns to anyone who wants them.

"I have a hard time believing that most new iPad screens are not defective when so many people are complaining about the same problems."

I don't doubt your sincerity. However, a few hundred complaints on forums out of 3,000,00 sold does not demonstrate that "most new iPad screens" are defective."

I could be wrong. I wondered about the random shutdown issue of the early Macbooks and although it took a while to figure out, every MacBook was vulnerable to the problem. There was never a recall, but anyone who experienced the problem got a free and timely repair.

If the new iPad looks different than an iPad 2 isn't necessarily a flaw, its a characateristic. In my opinion, some people who have made complaints about their iPads are never going to be satisfied, and are complaining yellow-tinted about displays that look fine.

Backlight bleed, splotches, stains - defects, agreed,

Okay. Let's get real. You know as well as I do that the complaints regarding the yellow screen, and within that a partial or full yellow screen, are not limited to this particular forum. As another commentor has pointed out to you earlier today, there are multiple other forums online in which many people are complaining about the same issues. So we're not just talking about the Apple support forum here.

I agree that the fact that a user doesn't notice of defect might mean that there is no defect. But it does not follow that simply because a user does not notice a defect that there is no defect. I'm willing to bet that there are many people out there with defective screens whether it be dead pixels dust under the screen etc. who have no idea. And there are probably people out there who notice uneven coloring on their screen but just don't care enough to do anything about it. And while those people might be perfectly happy with their screens it does not mean that the screen is not technically defective.  In fact, I am happy with my current iPad screen even though, as I pointed out before, it is fairly warm and there is some dust underneath. A little dust and warmth is perfectly acceptable to me.

Finally, I agree that some people who are complaining about a full yellow tint may never be happy. However, I cannot accept that a screen that is half yellow and half white is within spec or normal. And that is exactly what the genius tried to tell me, i.e., that my unevenly colored screen was within specification.  I forgot to add that although they allowed me to exchange my iPad, they made me sign a document that acknowledged that this would be the last exchange I could do for screen issues. This was my fourth exchange. So other people have been very lucky in that they've been able to return and return again until they get something that they are happy with or give up altogether.

"Your saying that there are very few defective new iPads has as much validity as someone saying that there are a lot based on this and other forums."

You're right, nobody has any validity here. Maybe there are lots of splotchy, coffee-stained iPads. However, I've been concerned with the yellow tint issue, which I had when I got my iPad.

Comments such as only the poster can see the problem, and that other people can't, and pictures of iPads that look fine (albeit different from an iPad 2), despite assertions of a yellow tint, make me think the yellow tint issue is overblown by some people.

I lurk here for a while, decide to make thoughts known after difficult efforts to find true iPad.

It is now a given that iPads have problems with display big time. I discover mine come with yellow display, which make reading text like looking through runny egg yolk. Very unappetizing. Genius at usually excellent Covent Garden apple store in London (best one in city of all five) at first not acknowledge what is obvious, he talk to supervisor, he talk HIS supervisor. Result: I take iPad home and use for five days. No change, I return iPad, given new iPad and apology.

New iPad have same yellow eggs for breakfast colort! I return Covent Garden store. But I visit store often, and I know people there because I spend much time in store already buying other products, and I think I am now knonwn for being person with iPad problem. Not easy with 3rd my iPad, to exchange with staff that is not now so friendly.

So. Of course, SAME problem, plus purple and pink like discoloration on lower third, portrait mode. Now I take back to another store. It's embarrassing. Problems each time. I am nervous, like I have done something wrong. I send person who work for me to other Apple stores in London. She eventually visit all stores in four days - she not happy but she must do this for me, or I not pay her. She see same problems I do: yellow colorations, backlight "bleed", also bad pixels on one, and what I think is misaligned display on another.

Someones talk about dust and hair under glass. I do not see this. However, on misaligned display, we see what look like three very smale, minute even, particles of plastic, which I think leek in during packaging process. Then I begin return trips again, sometimes in little disguise (dress different mostly, get haircut, wear hat). However, I also not see same workers at all Apple stores, which is a relief. I think large turn-over due maybe to having to lie about products as well as grossly low pay is part of reason for lack of longterm employments.

Anyway, I still do not have true iPad for me, despite good effort and my good intentions, it make 14 times now. I am thinking mail order for next try, but worry Apple not accept return because I may be on darklist. I also hear reports from cousin in Glasgow that store there may have good displays, but that is a rumor and I don't know how to confirm. I would ask my cousin to make purchase for me, however he is reluctant because I make mistake of tell him of my woes. also, I do not trust my cousin to judge display properly, as some here have made indicationthat not everyone is capable of judging what is good and what is bad in a display.

    Quetions:

Should I try mail order? 1-2 week wait, though. My cousin suggest it, he says Apple more likely to have best displays/all products really, via mail order because they don't like to deal with return via shipping, perfer get issues settled in stores. Makes sense but I am not sure and maybe my cousin just worries I will insist he shop on my behalf.

Or should I make long trip to Glasgow myself? I have not been north in long time, but travel by train is easy enough. Also weather forecast not particulary good for next 7 days, not cold really, but rain each day. But my mood is very very dark, to match the weather, so maybe this is good sign I should go.

Thoughts, anyone? Mail order, Glagow, maybe both, if one good and one not, I keep good and return bad?
