Q: Is anybody else getting a yellowish hue on their new iPad?

Hi guys, i need your help. I just got my new iPad today 4G+Wifi 64GB (white) and i am getting a distinct yellowish hue on my retina display. On my iPad 2 it is clearly much nicer and brighter in terms of the resolution. I was making the two comparisons by using safari and just opening up a blank white page with the brightness tuned to the max on both, i could tell the new iPad is yellowish and the iPad 2 is white and crisp. I mean is apple kidding me? Retina display with more pixels results in yellowish crappy resolution than my iPad 2? Im not sure if i should return this junk back to the apple store or if they do replace me will they give me back the same crappy display. I am stuck in a middle right now as my authorised reseller is currently out of stock and when i called apple support today they were telling me i would have to wait much longer if they have to ship it back to me. This is really ridiculous and i hope if anyone shares the same problem do drop me a reply.

Thanks.

I agree with you in what regards to speculation, no one but apple truly knows the extent to the problem and the number of returns. I also agree with 45000 views in the whole of forum is peanuts. There are however a few points you need to consider:

    - You can’t say that 45000 views (now 46000!!!) of a specific thread that has little more than 1 month is meaningless.  People don’t just stumble upon a thread by chance, they normally look for a specific thread to clarify doubts, state problems, etc...

46000 views means that quite a lot of people (I have no idea how many, its obviously not 46000 but many) have taken the time and energy to look up this matter and if they did they had queries, doubts or problems about the yellow hue that needed to be clarified.

    - If you take a look at the Using Ipad Discussion index on the forum you will notice that very few threads have more that 3000 views and the vast majoriy of the ones that do are significantly older than this one. I’ve seen 33 pages (which out of the +2000 is nothing) of the index at 30 threads per page and most have views range from the dozens to the hundreds.

    - This is only one forum but there are various out there with similar topics.

To some things up, I consider the 46000 views of this one topic is overwhelming and everything but meaningless.

It is meaningless because on this forum we are like fish in a bowl, we have no idea how many threads apple has deleted, what precisely a "view" means - is it per person, or same person returning to the thread, etc., and given the nature of the way the OP was titled: asking an open ended question that was bound to inspire curiosity, the counter is really useless.

That said, people on the web forums have posted images of their discolored screen, which may or may not have been altered.  Unless Apple Computer chooses to publicly post information, speculation and trying to engage public/herd support is pointless.

All those afflicted can do is read these threads with an open mind and avoid speculation about failure rates or anything else.  If the owner has an issue they feel is problematic enough to prevent their usage of the device, then they should go to the nearest apple store and present it to one of the store staff.

I read threads like this and researched carefully on the web before purchasing an iPad 3, and made sure to open the box in the store and thoroughly analyze the unit before leaving the store.  Given the issues mentioned in the mass media like warming, I wanted to ensure my unit was perfect - which I have been I fortunate, but apparently, not in the minority, that is has been so far.

Apple has probably sold 15 MM units, so if there were above average failure rates, the media would live all over them, just as apple was in the news 2 weeks ago for the Foxconn situation, and it just hasn't materialized.

These forums by definition attract disgruntled purchasers, as those with ideal units are out using them, don't even know these forums exist, etc.

@jaym€: Hi, I encounter the same phenomenon as you concerning this ondulation while scrolling. Back in the Apple Store I spoke to the manager and we checked all of the showroom iPads 3rd Gen. They all showed the same phenomenon! And the Store manager just had no idea. I even sent an email to Apple iPad feedback providing your video link, but got no answer so far. As nobody referred to Your post in this thread: Have you returned your iPad with that ondulation phenomenon? I searched the web but didn't find any posts on this question.

    Regards

^ I did reply to his post - suggested that he shut off his iPad and restart it. But he has not replied. I suggest you try the same, it seems to be a screen re-draw issue... Maybe the processor can't quickly enough redraw the screen, or maybe the RAM is being hogged by some other App. If that's the case, restarting the iPad should remove the problem. If what I suspect is true - that it's a memory issue, them I'm not surprised that the iPads in the store exhibited the same problem... They are constantly being used with many Apps running... So try restarting your iPad and let us know the results.

I shut off my iPad and I restarted it completely new. No change. So out of the box with no running apps it shows the same ondulation. And yes, we did not restart the iPads in the shop, but we cloosed the running apps. The phenomenon didn't change. Actually I would agree it must be a memory issue. So what should I do? Return it and try another one?

@Fritz2012 I really don't know what to suggest since only two of you have reported this problem so we have not much data on it... In your case on which App does this problem occur? Is it only the AppStore App? On my iPad, it happens only on the AppStore app and that too only on the Top Charts tab. But the undulation is ever so slight that if it had not been brought to my notice, I would never have noticed it...

^ Ah ok, try this: in the AppStore App, on the Top Charts tab, put your finger on the gray horizontal bar in the middle of the screen and then pull the screen down. Does the undulation still occur, or if it does, is it signyficantly less than when you put your finger on one of the featured Apps and pull it down?

I gave it a try: Where ever I put my finger, it stills occurs! Thanks though!

^ you're welcome... But you didn't say if this undulation occurred only on the AppStore app and the iTunes app, or whether it occurs on other apps too. Also what country's iTunes store are you on? Onion on the US iTunes store. On further reflection, I think this issue has to do with the iTunes and Appstpre Apps and is not a memory issue. I remember some time back I had screen behaving in a funny manner and it turned out to be a bug on the AppStore. It went away when Apple updated the app.

Anyway we are going off-topic on this thread. Best is to start a new thread regarding this problem and maybe more members will post there... Regards

Just went to the Fed Ex location to drop off an iPad to send back to Apple.  Guy working at the desk said that he had seen a lot of them coming back.  Interesting...

Update - OK, after many, many returns, I send my cousin, who has eye for details I do not necessarily trust, to purchase TWO iPads for, in Glasgow. Reports of good iPads in Glasgow, so it seems reasonable to try and I can return one or both via cousin.

Unfortunately I am in London, but I make trip with wife to meet cousin and his wife in Manchester. Big city, ugly. (Luckily, UK small country, so trip for iPad could be worst.) I insepct both iPads. One has uneven lighting, unacceptable. Other has the warm yellow cast, but unlike my prvious iPads, this is uniform, not partial. Progress! (I had to resist urge to visit Manchester Apple store.)

One iPad return to Glasgow with cousin. One return home with me and I will attempt to make tint disappear by usage over next several days. 15 returns and one possible keeper! My wife berate me and ask why I not purchase iPad 2 instead. I might have but I already had iPad 2 and stupidly sell it for new iPad.

But it should not be almost impossible to find good product from famous company. And I not alone in this as I see many here with similar issue. Please cross fingers for me.

Update: After More use of the iPad 3 I noticed that it has this beautiful gradual tint from red/ pink from the front camera down to the home button where it is green/blue. Typing on the keyboard horizontally gives you 2 tones. I am extremely unhappy with this purchase it was difficult finding the money to buy it.

Even if I want to sell i, what would I say? " Any one wants to buy an iPad with bad colors?"

How much will it sell for?

My friend bought me this from USA and I live in the Middle East. Is there any way I can return this product for replacement or money refund?

I create image for test warm/cool panel on ipad. You just download to your ipad and see which color match natural grey of your screen.

My ipad natural grey but my white look warm like D65 on my calibrated monitor.
