Q: Is anybody else getting a yellowish hue on their new iPad?

Hi guys, i need your help. I just got my new iPad today 4G+Wifi 64GB (white) and i am getting a distinct yellowish hue on my retina display. On my iPad 2 it is clearly much nicer and brighter in terms of the resolution. I was making the two comparisons by using safari and just opening up a blank white page with the brightness tuned to the max on both, i could tell the new iPad is yellowish and the iPad 2 is white and crisp. I mean is apple kidding me? Retina display with more pixels results in yellowish crappy resolution than my iPad 2? Im not sure if i should return this junk back to the apple store or if they do replace me will they give me back the same crappy display. I am stuck in a middle right now as my authorised reseller is currently out of stock and when i called apple support today they were telling me i would have to wait much longer if they have to ship it back to me. This is really ridiculous and i hope if anyone shares the same problem do drop me a reply.

Thanks.

I was in the Apple store yesterday, and I mentioned yellow screens to one of the people working there.  He said that it is just the glue drying.  I think that the teardown of the iPad pretty much proves that the screen isn't glued to the glass.  But he said that's what they were told by Apple.

Do not know if I have anything to do with the yellow screen, but I've been watching 3 ipad 3 gen 16gb wifi exposed in a computer store (Portugal), one had in the settings "model MD328GP" (the white is not pure), but other two was a "model MD331GP" and other "model MD332GP" (with pure white), has researched the net and find nothing about MD331GP and MD332GP.

@usmaak...  whatever the real reason, drying glue or some other, it is a fact that in many cases the yellow does lighten after a few days use. It happened with my iPad 3 too, quite noticeably in fact, and so has it for others. Personally I do not believe that in most cases burning it for hours at full brightness expedites the the process of reducing the yellow... Rather it's just the passage of time that does it. Moreover, I don't know if keeping it at full brightness with it plugged in to the charger, and therefore greeting it very warm is a good thing for it iPad. I do suspect that it might adversely affect the long term life of the battery. So unless you have no other option I would use the burning-in method with caution...

It does get very warm when cranked up and plugged in.  It does cool down quickly though.  But whatever it is, it's not glue holding the screen to the glass.  According to the teardown, the screen is glued only around the edges.  There's a foam strip or something like that which holds it in place.  So if the yellow is lightening over a few days of use, then there's something else involved.

The only yellowing I've seen has been in blotches on the screen.  That never goes away for me.  But I haven't seen an entirely yellow screen.  Warmer, certainly.  But not yellow.

So my new iPad has a diagonal green/pink tinge that goes from green in the top left to pink on the bottom right. You can clearly see it in the twitter feed.

I'm not happy about it and thinking of an exchange but fear I'll get one that's worse. Is anyone elses like this? (Enclosed picture).

There is also a backlight leak where about 2" of white light are visible shining through the edge of the screen when it is tilted.

IMO, pink/green tint is way worse than yellow.  That's just my personal preference.  I exchanged one that had blue and pink.  Drove me nuts.  I also had one with a backlight bleed.  But unless it's actually affecting how you see stuff on the screen, it's a minor issue.  Again, IMO.

    Take it back!

I don't think you could get one worse then that but if you do exchange that one too. If you're not happy what good is it!

I have one EXACTLY like yours . Notiice How the center of the twitter timeline is brighter than the rest of the screen and how its greenish to the top and pinkish to the bottom. when I use my keyboard horizontally I get 2 tones , half pinkish half greenish.

Consider yourself lucky , u live in the usa u can just drop by the Apple store and replace it. I believe the closest Apple store to me is 6 hours away by plane on another continent. I would buy another one but how will I know I wont get another display issue? Ill just wait until September then the issue must be fixed for sure

Has anyone noticed that this thread has shortened from around 40 pages a day or two ago, to 34 as of this writing?

I know Apple deletes some posts when the discussions get out of hand, but 5 pages worth?  This thread is considerably more civil than many of the others on the same topics on macrumors.

The only other times I've noticed Apple deleting posts is when they are doing damage control. Though I suppose the very existence of this thread argues against that...

Still, 5 pages worth of post gone *poof* is puzzling.

@mcdj interesting you should notice that. I myself have not noticed any shortening. I've been following this thread daily and have kept track of page nos. and it has not regressed. Maybe something wrong with the page numbering on your browser? I do note that when I make a post, it shows the wrong page number. I have to refresh the page to get the right page number. Also, sometimes merely refreshing the page is not enough, I have to close this site on Safari and then reopen it. Could be a bug in Safari on my iPad, or a bug in the Forum website.

Ok my replacement just came in.. Sad to say its ever so slightly more yellow to the upper left corner this time round.. It's negligible when brightness is at 100%.. I suppose I'll turn it all the way up whenever I feel sad for myself. Time to go buy some lottery and hope I've the same luck as with iPads..

Thanks for the replies. So an update - I was at the Apple store (in the UK) today for an appointment.

They didn't really seem to want to change it but offered a replacement regardless.

The new one is better in uniformity although has a slight yellow patch on the left side (seems to be the most common location). Overall it is better than the one that went back so I'll keep it.

I must have looked at 30+ new iPads and all of them exhibit some undesired display quality.

After going through this torment myself, I'd say to the people who have a bad unit, swap it to get a better one, but don't search for an excellent or perfect display, they don't exist.

    Good luck.

Glad you found a better one. I agree a "good" one doesn't exist. Seems to me this is the first time Apple is putting out just an "okay" display. I mean better resolution, yes. But ISP angles are awefull!

Here's some pics of the best display I found of the six ipads i bought. It has the darker lower left (upper corner in portrait) problem just not as bad as the rest. Still ***** though.

Really bad though when on a light background reading.

    and a grey image

the lower left of the screen is burnt (darker) and off color (yellow) then the rest of the screen.

it's much easier to see how one corner of the ipad screen is darker and off color when the same photo of it is rotated 180 degrees and put on top.

    top photo:

What's the most recent date someone has got an iPad from the online store? I returned mine and have been waiting to buy another one from the online store, with the hopes that they'd get the issues under control.
