Q: Is anybody else getting a yellowish hue on their new iPad?

Hi guys, i need your help. I just got my new iPad today 4G+Wifi 64GB (white) and i am getting a distinct yellowish hue on my retina display. On my iPad 2 it is clearly much nicer and brighter in terms of the resolution. I was making the two comparisons by using safari and just opening up a blank white page with the brightness tuned to the max on both, i could tell the new iPad is yellowish and the iPad 2 is white and crisp. I mean is apple kidding me? Retina display with more pixels results in yellowish crappy resolution than my iPad 2? Im not sure if i should return this junk back to the apple store or if they do replace me will they give me back the same crappy display. I am stuck in a middle right now as my authorised reseller is currently out of stock and when i called apple support today they were telling me i would have to wait much longer if they have to ship it back to me. This is really ridiculous and i hope if anyone shares the same problem do drop me a reply.

Thanks.

    @dennislaska,

Can you please post the week of production for all of your three units. Please put your iPad's serial number and it will tell you the week of production here:

Week 16 is the newest that I've seen.  I heard of one person getting a week 24.  But unless that's from the future, the website for determining build date is a little off in some cases.

    Hi NiCOOo,

How's your screen now? I have exactly the same problem you have with your ipad.

Did the uniformity change after a few weeks?

    Thanks.

I received my second replacement much earlier than 11th April. I was kind of skeptical initially before I unboxed the iPad having many bad experiences with apple panels in general. I can say I am lucky this time when I discovered that the screen is firstly UNIFORM. Of course I did not see shades or blotches of pink, cyan, green or grey on the screen. As to the screen temperature or color temperature, it came to me as slightly yellow initially when I unboxed it. It was warmer than my so called iPhone 4s "reference" screen which was actually bright white. The so called yellow white somehow disappeared after a day or two of use. I did not do a burn in. I don't think it is a matter of getting used to the color temperature. It is not bright white which I think spoils the panel's ability to represent the colors in a more natural and with better contrast. The colors are deeper and not white washed because of the intensity of the screen bright white. This cannot be adjusted by the brightness level of the screen. It is how the panel is built and calibrated at the factories at Korea or elsewhere. Funny is that I managed to change my iPhone 4s just yesterday due to my static issue and now my "reference" panel has deeper greens and yellow which i love. It is not like my previous iPhone 4s that was bright white. I was short changed all these 4 months :(

Anyway, my friend emailed me a post edited photo with deep greens from his oled panel phone. His screen was beautiful with very saturated greens, reds, and yellow. When I compared it with his, my new iPad was quite close to his reference photo while my phone 4s was still a tad not as close. Anyway, I was much happier now, firstly with my uniform screen new iPad that has a good color temparature that shows colors pretty well but not as well as the oled panels. Also my iPhone is now better with a panel that is not too bright anymore with better colors. It really helps in reading since my eyes don't tire easily with such bright white color temparature. And the contrast is better for reading.

I guess in future when oled screens (which actually has a almost the same or better than retina resolution) is used for apple panels, apple fan boys like me will be happier and not have panel problems so frequently. I am now keeping my new iPad and iPhone with much care cause it is not easy to come by a screen that I like.

    Hello,

Exactly the same. Nothing changed, except you get used to, with a bit of effort. Still as yellow as day one! The problem is unlikely to change with time, it's not glue related... I'll keep this one for some more week, but by the end of may, I'll probably try a replacement.

I'm a bit anxious about it since I've seen really bad displays too... so I'm afraid to get something worse and to enter the multi-exchange vicious circle. Anyway, I've also checked my brother's iPad 1 and some friends iPad 2, and they are no perfect, but uniformity problems are clearly less visible!

I'll give a feedback when ready to do the exchange :)

I was at the Apple Store Gand Central NY recently and noted that all the iPads there had perfectly even screens, except for one that was slightly darker along the left edge. Earlier, I had been to other Apple stores and noted that there was considerable variation between the display units.... Some on the slightly blue side, some neutral and some warm... Meanwhile two of my friends picked up new iPads which I'm glad to say have perfectly even screens... One a 64gb Black from the Grand Central store and the other a 16gb White from Best Buy. Maybe Apple is finally sorting out this issue of uneven and overly warm displays?

OK. I read a bunch of the comments about warm or yellowish screen color on the new Ipad.  Mine improved somewhat over time but white is still warmer than my old Ipad 2.  My anxiety was whether or not I was getting true colors when displaying photos.  I tried the various screen tests available on line but still could not be completely convinced that my new Ipad was completely accurate.  I did the following to convince myself that photos were reasonably accurate.  I took a photo with a professional Nikon DSLR  of my new baby grandson's face and torso wearing a colorful top.  I loaded the photo on my new Ipad and physically held the Ipad next to my grandson's face and the colors matched the real live baby under indoor and outdoor lighting.  I did the same with my Ipad 2 which has whiter whites (or maybe blue tint whites) and the colors did not match the live baby as well. Other's may want to try this real life test to decide if they keep their unit.  My disappointment is that Apple in their haste to pump these units out have significant variability problems.  So, I am hesitant to return my unit since it does not have some of the problems reported by others.

I Recieved two new ones and they are certainly not yellow.  But one had a thread under the glass and the other had the entire left side dimly lit and a few marks on the chassis on the backside this go around.  Also seems to run cooler, but I think they are getting a grasp on this a little at a time.

But where I'm at is still not ok as far as a keeper is concerned.

The main thing that drove me away from the new iPad was the uneven lighting.  I had a few that were either yellowish or various combinations of pink/blue/green.  But I also had some that were white.  But they were all uneven, especially on the left side in portrait.  My wife kept one of the dimmer on the left ones, because she said that it didn't bother her.  I inherited her perfectly good iPad 2.

If they ever get a handle on the weird tints and uneven lighting, I'll get one for sure.

My first new iPad bought on the day one had similar marks. This is not refurbished unit, just another sample of "beautiful" Foxconn quality.

The blame shouldn't be on Foxconn. They're just the supplier. The product has an Apple logo on it. Apple deems these flaws as apparently within spec. And they can get away with it because the masses will still buy their products.

I'm waiting for a while to see if they iron these problems out.  If not, then I'll just wait for the iPad 4.  My biggest problem was that iOS 5 killed my original iPad.  It is now slow and it crashes frequently.  Though the iPad 2 isn't resolutionary, it's plenty fast and never crashes.  I can wait it out if I have to.  I'm used to the lower resolution again.
