Wow, great post!  I was not fully aware of how "airplane mode" functioned, thanks.  I have been following this thread since the beginning, and yes there are some people who are a tad too defensive for my liking.

Is the new iPad perfect?  Nope.  In many ways I preferred my "2", but I gave it away.  I could be mistaken but I thought Apple had acknowledged problems and were making alterations beginning with releases in December.

I understand why the 3 gets warmer (more processing power and that display is stunning) ... it just shouldn't get so hot that it shuts down.  That's the deal breaker for me.  I agree wih you, the 2 works well, so I will go back to the 2 as it doesn't have this overheating problem.  I will have solved my problem, but was just trying to prevent others from having the same experience I had.  My post was intended to informative and helpful to other pilots ... not argumentative or insulting.  It appears that certain participants in this forum seem to have a heart at war ... too bad.  I'm sure there's a lot to improve on in the relationships they have in their lives.  They should get busy with that and off these forums.

The FAA allows the use of the iPad to replace paper charts as an Electronic Flight Bag (EFB), provided you personally certify that it doesn't interfere with onboard comm/nav equipment (in Part 91 operations - basically the "not for hire" private pilots - guys who just fly their airplanes like you'd drive your car).  In all other applications, like the ones I mentioned, it is used to improve situational awareness or as a backup.  It is not ever to be used as a primary means of navigation.

Airplanes do lose power (alternators fail, belts break, etc.), and the iPad is a self contained battery powered device that won't be affected by loss of aircraft power.  In that capacity it is an excellent backup in what is otherwise a potentially serious situation.  An iPad with a bad elf WAAS GPS can get you safely down if there is an electrical failure.  Not plan A but a pretty good plan B.

The weather and traffic that work on the iPad are ADS-B (TIS-B and FIS-B) again provided by our friends at the FAA.  This is the NextGen replacement for enroute and terminal radar we've all know for years.  It's a GPS based system so the technology is outstanding.  The weather product is NEXRAD (similar to XM weather on garmin devices, except it's free).  My airplane is equipped with ADS-B out and in so I am able to fully participate in the weather and traffic offerings.  The iPad is a really good MFD (multifunction display) due to that stunning display.

Finally, in "airplane mode" both WiFi and Bluetooth can still be enabled.  Airplane mode is designed to prevent the iPad from transmitting (and possibly creating interference with onboard comm/nav devices).  WiFi and Bluetooth are passive receivers o the interference issue is resolved.  My certified ADS-B transponder provides both a WiFi and Bluetooth out signal in addition to the hardwire connection to the transponder and Garmin GTN650 comm/nav.  I use the WiFi feature as it can feed both iPads (and passengers too if they are interested) and I am able to monitor the  Weather and Traffic on one very nice device.

    Cherokee Pilot

Thanks for the explanation. Not sure that I can use this information for anything but who knows.

The iPad in any version is great. I'm happy with my 3. Some people are bothered by the fact that I am happy with my new iPad and that it shows no signs of overheating. According to this/these individuals it makes me a lesser informed less aware or blind, Apple cult member. Some real poppycock to be comeplety honest. In any case I believe altitude also plays a role in how some of these devices function although I have no idea how and I really don't care to seek the answer as my life revolves around many other more meaningful things than figuring the ins and outs of how my ipad works. It just does and quite well. I'm glad however that you were able to find a solution.

OSX you're rambling again. Please save yourself the time and trouble. You're quite insignificant to me as are your opinions and assumptions mainly because they are of little to no benefit to anyone here or anywhere. Your efforts are really useless. My iPad works just fine and I'm quite happy with it. If you don't like that, quite frankly it's too bad for you. Just suck it up and move on because you're not accomplishing anything positive. OSX you're more like VISTA, quite useless. Oh and don't bother responding, we don't care.

My guess is that "Cherokee Pilot" is our sock puppet again -- and that he enlisted another individual with aviation expertise to contribute the more specialized info.

One thing I can say for sure -- if you read the last two posts by "Cherokee Pilot," they don't sound at all like they came from the same person.

Don't get it confused. If you read the post on this thread you would realize that Kin Hill and I had it out over the same issue of inaccurate assumptions. Apparently when I posted the fact that my 7 year old expressed that the new iPad was hot in his opinion, it prompted Kim Hill to question whether or not I was a fraud of some sort. The difference is that I took the time to show how that assumption was not only wrong but how my son had the right to his opinion on what he considered to be "hot". Everyone has that same right and no one should tell them different.

The facts stand that although the new iPad does get warm, some get hot and that some people find the heat that falls within accepted Apple specs is not acceptable by them. The fact also stands that Apple has made provisions for those that are not happy with the new iPad and a dissatisfied customer can also choose to purchase an iPad 2 instead or another brand tablet altogether. I find that if you need to be insulting or argumentative it doesn't benefit this or any thread. Even I've gotten caught up in the heat of the moment and have become somewhat argumentative, however, making accusations and assumptions of cult membership, blind following, Scientology, Tom Cruises' divorce, sock puppetry, conspiracies and the sort are foolish.

Please, before hitting the submit button, read your post and decide for yourself if the content of said post will be beneficial to anyone except your ego and if not then just delete it, don't bother.

If apple makes adjustments to the manufacturing process of the new iPad it'll be an improvement on an already good products surrounded by a little and I must emphasize "little" controversy. I welcome improvements but it doesn't mean that they have a faulty product, it only means they have a product tat they can improve on like all products.

Ummm, let's not re-write history. What you *actually* said was, "…he leaned his bare stomach on [the iPad] lightly and said "ouch that's hot! It burned my stomach…"

Shortly afterward, you actually admitted your purpose — that you "went fishing" to see if you could provoke a response from me (the burned children theme was a sock puppet favorite at the time). Next, you went on a lengthy, photo-strewn rant that the moderators chose to delete.

So — your self-righteousness revisionism is looking a bit tattered.

Sorry Kim nothing of mine looks tattered. So in fact his opinion is that it was hot. My post say it all and anyone looking for confirmation can look it up although I see no reason to since its really not very helpful to this point of this thread. I not interested in a "new" or reboot of this debate with you so you can pick somebody else to debate with. im sure you can find other credible and non credible people in this forum who post things that will continue to print you into a senseless debate. I'm just glad at this point that I havn't signed up with any other forums which may contain an absurd collection of worthless debating. Take care Kim.

Let's see – you start out with the self-admitted goal of eliciting a particular response from me. After getting that response, you try to attack me with it.

    Sorry – that's hackery.

As it happens, I may well be the person with the best overview/documentation of this mega-thread. And this has proven to be inconvenient for sock puppets and blowhards.

Only in your own mind.  LMAO!  You have an ego to match your absurdity.  That's from all your practice on this forum because you haven't a life, or a clue.

And by the way, how do you know whose posts have been deleted and who's haven't?  Unless your cross referencing email updates with every single post here, there would be no way for you to know that unless you worked here for Apple.  And if you are cross referencing each post, that just reinforces the fact even more that you have no life.

Says the guy whose posting output exceeds mine by a wide margin. And whose mood swings — and threatening language (those of you with email subscriptions from last night will know what I mean) result in wholesale deletions.

But sure- we'll listen to your complaints…

Perhaps but I'm neither a sock puppet or a blowhard. Also, to better clarify or simply remind you, when my son expressed himself the way that he did I thought to myself that if I posted that event on this forum you would quite possibly respond with some crazy assumption that I was the "same person" under another name, referring to some "sock puppet" or "blowhard" as you call it. Sure enough when I posted you took to it like bait on a fish hook and began making the assumptions that you did until I showed you that in this instance you were completely wrong. I did that so that maybe you would think a little before you went accusing people of all sorts of things that you might be dead wrong about and I proved my point. No I don't frequent forums and no I'm not a newbie. Been with Apple since 1992 and don't recall ever needing to join an Apple forum until now. Because of my posted opinions, assesments and views, I've been called a fake by you and a fanatic by others. Two polar opposites yet each one of you either swore or swears by their assumptions of me and or my opinions. Put simply I'm a two decade Apple product user that is happy with my new iPad although it admittedly gets warm which by some people's opinion is hot or just too hot for them. Other devices have proven to be defective and have been exchanged under the provisions that Apple has made available. Those are the facts. People on either side of the fence need to suck it up and accept things for what they are and stop looking for out of the ordinary reasons why someone either is for or is against Apple, their products or their methods. Kim Hill and OSX are two polar opposites and yet you both have looked for absurd reasons to attack my views because quite frankly you can't attack my person.  I'm just being honest and fair in my opinions and some people don't like it. Best wishes to all, I hoping I've left you with more clarity on this subject and the type of people and content that floats around this forum. Goodnight.

This thread was perfectly civil until Kim started accusing people of all sorts of things.  Funny how his posts seem to be allowed, though I'm not positive of that since I don't read through the forum, only what shows up in my email.  But it sure seems like Apple has no problem with him since he defends the iPad at every turn.

Prophloe, you've already copped to trolling me — which you naturally followed up on by complaining about my response. Now, you're playing the aggrieved voice-of-reason.

I must admit, the entertainment value is solid.
