iPad 3 is getting hot

Received my new iPad today and I love the new screen...but right off I noticed that it gets really-really hot. I have the original iPad and have used it for hours at a time and it has never, ever got hot. Is this normal? I don't like it...it makes the iPad hard to use for a long period.

Interesting note today (Sunday afternoon)--I have been using the new ipad all day--and no more heat issues !! Friday and Saturday, I was noticing it get warm, especially running full speed hd video over wifi--in an hours time it was warm enough for my cat to get interesting in sitting next to it....But today, I just watched an hours worth of hbo video on it and there was no heat problem at all--and i've been using it all day. I've also noticed that now that I've gone thru a full discharge>>charge cycle, the battery life is looking normal (9% discharge for one hour of hd video over wifi) and charging is going a little more quickly.

Just thought I would mention this as a data point.

My iPad gets pretty hot as well. I have been web surfing for about 20 minutes and I can already feel the left side is much warmer than the rest of the back of the unit. Not hot as of yet but. I have noticed when playing graphic intensive games that it gets pretty hot and is getting uncomfortable to hold.

I will take the brightness down a little to see if it helps, but I am already running at about 80% of maximum.

Yes, my "new Ipad" is also draining the battery very very fast without even using it that much and also is getting very hot and make it uncomfortable to use.

My son (5 yo) complained yesterday of "burned hand" while playing with this ipad and when I went to help him I could feel that indeed it was very hot for an adult, tooooo hot for a kid.

I want to know what is going on because as it is I don't feel safe to let my kid play with the ipad.

Shame because he has adopted my previous ipad and ipad2 without any problem and now I have to restrict him to play with this "new iPad".

I hope apple reply to our concerns very soon!

I purchased iPad 64Gb 4G

I have a Verizon 4G 64G iPad and after reading all these posts I put it to the test. I ran it non-stop for over 3 hours, with video and internet surfing over WiFi and 4G. The results: the temperature is no different than my previous iPad2.

I would suggest you take it back to the apple store and get a new one. It has to be something related to certain batch of iPads.

My iPad3 works perfectly fine.

There has been a statement from Apple on the heat issue. I saw the article on CNET and on AppleInsider. Apple says the temperatures are within specs. Go read the article. It says that if people are concerned and feel their temperature is higher that they should contact AppleCare. Just wanted you to know if you have not seen the article yet.

So after reading some other posts - I remembered that I did increase the brightness of my screen to 100% shortly after first turning it on- as it seemed dim while I was checking out the suposed incredible new graphics. And they are great! Then since it had been such a long day that I had opted instead of really checking out the ipad to just watch some shows on hulu - so my experience with the heat was while it was at full brightness and after a couple of hours of streaming video while the ipad was in a case made for my old ipad. I haven't had a ton of time to experiment with it or even use it for that matter since I wont take it out of the house till my new case comes in the mail. But I have reduced the brightness and haven't really experienced any more heat problems in the short moments I have used it for light activity.

No, you won't lose any settings or data. It's traditionally called a reboot. To do so: Press and hold BOTH the power and home buttons at the SAME time for about 10 seconds (ignore the red slider to shut down) until the Apple Logo appears, then let go of both buttons and your iPad will reboot. Again, you won't lose any data or settings and this action often cures odd ills. One thing it will do for sure is stop any apps which may be running in the background. iPads can multi-task and people often go from one app to another app, forgetting something is still running. The more things running at one time, the more power iPad needs to use, which can cause the battery to run warmer.
