iPad 3 is getting hot

Received my new iPad today and I love the new screen...but right off I noticed that it gets really-really hot. I have the original iPad and have used it for hours at a time and it has never, ever got hot. Is this normal? I don't like it...it makes the iPad hard to use for a long period.

While I am mildly concerned about the iPad damaging itself - that would be covered for a year. I am concerned about it being uncomfortable to use. My main work horse is my Mbps- (gets way to hot to use on my lap so it stays on the desk) but I also have my husbands Mac pro at my disposal if needed plus a pc desk top, pc lap top, a 1st gen iPad and a color nook.

The 1st gen ipad i bought used a couple months ago for my mom to replace the nook we bought her (which was not what we hoped) and I found it so great I had to get myself one. It wasn't until I had an iPad at my disposal that I realized how much easier it is for many tasks like checking email, news, banking, and a ton of other tasks that can be done while hanging on the couch or laying in bed. the instant on means I can check email or a bank account in a few seconds during time that I would normally be too tired to use productively - not to mention a million other reasons to love it- but IT IS MENT TO BE A HAND HELD DEVICE. It should not be uncomfortable to hold in my hand or on my lap since that is my main use for it.

So no it has not burnt my skin - but it has gotten uncomfortable- and I can imagine it would be much more uncomfortable on a 90 degree day. I am going to take it into the apple store tomorrow and see what they say but I am fairly certain it is getting returned. Not sure yet if I will exchange for different one (doubt they would even have one in stock to give me) or for the iPad 2 or just for my money back till a later date when I know if it is a defective iPad or just a propery of all the new features packed into this spectacular life changing device.

I am kinda bummed this is the first time I have had something as soon as it came out- and now it has to go back:(

I agree with you completely. I think folks like CNET and other tech sites (who are acting more like Moodys and S & P giving out AAA ratings to junk sub-prime derivatives) should be ashamed of themselves. To compare this device to laptops in terms of temps (even Apple stopped referring to laptops as laptops some time ago because of heat) is ridiculous. This is a handheld tablet, as you correctly point out.

I went to 4 Apple resellers today in Prague, where the device just lanched. I examined at least 10 different new Ipads and most of them were warm to bordering on hot in the left hand bottom corner. I would not want to hold this for extended lengths of time either in portrait or landscape, unless using it in landscape from the opposite side of the warm/hot corner. It's disturbing even when just warm for me because it feels so uneven compared to the other hand. Out of balance.

I own a great many Apple products. They are far and away the best. My beef is less with Apple, who I am confident will get this solved. But all of the tech sites who are supposed to be neutral guides and be in the know and advise the public have not only dropped the ball, but are behaving like interested parties here. That you need to go to forums to learn what's going on says it all.

Thanks.

People People People

So far maybe 200 iPad3 users have comnplained online about heat issues. Out of almost 4 million sold to date. If it is not working correctly for you , RETURN IT, EXCHANGED IT or live with it. Apple is the best at taking care of it's customers, so if it is not working properly, do something about it. Nothing is wrong with alerting people to a potential problem, however this is turing into the common yearly Apple ******** festival. You know , antenna gate, yellow screens issues, ect ect. remember those, didn't hear much after the initial "media Mileage" was over. Some people truely have issues, but the vast majority will do ANYTHING, to have these same issues, sad but I guess it is human nature.

Apple is not perfect, but it will help it's customers. Yes the iPad 3 is warmer than the iPad 2 . It has to be with what went into this new iPad. Like someone stated before Apple can't deny physics, simply because it's APPLE.

Anyway, enough, for now , until the new Apple product comes out and another "issue" comes out. Almost makes me miss the days when using Apple meant this never happened because only 3 % of us used the products. Careful what you wish for , i guess.

I think I have a god ipad in a bad batch.

My battery lasts a long time but does take an age to recharge.

My ipad does not overheat even when playing real racing 2HD and charging at same time although my wall charger does heat up. Try draining the battery down to 0% then recharging fully

The display is awesome and I can have 100% brightness with the battery still draining slow.

The camera is not as good as it should be but the hd video is good.

It is a shame the voice dictation only works when you are a certain distance away.

Hope this helps.(I have white 32GB wifi)

Hi Cano44, thank you for your tests on your new iPad and iPad2 - good on you for trying to get some objective data in here.

My story is: I recently upgraded to a new iPad from an iPad2. As my first piece of Apple kit, I absolutely loved the iPad2, but after a few months the two things that I wished for was a better screen and Siri, so going to a new iPad was an easy call (no Siri, but the dictation for emails feature is very cool). Unfortunately I sold my iPad2 before learning about the heat and overheating issues of the new iPad, and sure enough, mine is certainly running warm. I don't think it's as hot as the bad ones some people have, but my iPad2 only ever felt like metal cutlery would after being held in my hand (i.e no warmer than skin-temp), so that's what I expect/want my new iPad to be like. To me, a tablet is designed to be held and the tactile nature is absolutely a part of the experience, so other people saying 'but laptops get warm' doesn't work for me personally; I love the temperature-inert slab of wonderfulness that the iPad2 was. So after a few days with my new iPad (and yes, doing all the full discharge/recharge tricks) I think I'm learning I'd rather go back to a cold iPad2 than have a warm new iPad with the phenomenal screen. As someone who loves gadget technology, this is a big admission for me! 🙂

So, Cano44, to help me decide whether to return my unit and possibly go back to an iPad2 or not, I was wondering if you could post some data about your new iPad, since you seem to have a 'good one'? Would you mind visiting this website and entering the serial of your unit and posting the results (particularly the date and the plant it was manufactured in)? http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html

And perhaps if others do the same, it would help us all make our resptive calls on whether our individual units are faulty and whether we can each live with the experience our 'pads are offering us.

Many thanks!

That's perfect - thanks a lot, Cano44. I realised I hadn't posted mine as well:

Name: iPad 3

Screen size: 9 inch

Screen resolution: 2048x1536 pixels

Colour: Black

Capacity: 16GB

Factory: DQ (China - Foxconn refurbished??)

There was also another 'good' one from another thread, and the production week was 6 and factory was DN (China, Chengdu - Foxconn).

So we have units in week 6 and 7 that are 'good', and units in week 2 and 10 that aren't 100%. The factories could also play a part. But I suspect we need a lot more info about good/bad units before we can draw any conclusions. The more info the better, people - feel free to chime in!

I'm sure this information is located within this discussion thread somewhere, but, how do I find out what the serial number is of my new iPad?

I don't experience extreme heat, but, the charging issues leave a lot to be desired on a device that costs as much as the new iPad, and, one of the things I enjoy about the iPad is using it at full brightness, so, I don't feel that I should have to turn it down.

As it is now, I'm not really using my new iPad for much at all, because the battery runs out WAY before ten hours, and takes forever to charge.

I'm not really very happy with these issues and I'm in the process of deciding whether or not just to return it all together and just get the iPad2 instead.

I also read that the new iPad is more likely to sustain damage if it is accidentally dropped from waist level compared to iPad2.

I only have a few days longer to decide.

A friend of mine warned me about getting one so soon because if any potential "glitches" of new models. I'm just not sure these "glitches" will ever be worked out, even if I take back new iPad and wait to re-purchase it.

Any thoughts?

In the meantime, I'd like to look up when mine was made by using serial number.

I don't have heating issues as far as I can tell. But my screen is yellowish on the left side and right sides, and brighter in the middle.
