iPad 3 is getting hot

Yeah, my new iPad 3 is instantly hot on the back lower left side where you grip when held in portrait mode. The last two generation iPads never had this problem. I hope we can get a response on this.

Unfortunately, I have this issue as well. What's up with this, Apple?

The speculation is that it is the 4g radio chipset--However, I have the wi-fi only version and while it doesnt get hot, it does get warm--something my ipad 1 never did. Im sure we are going to hear more about this, but its a known issue and it is in the press.

I have the wi-fi 64 gb and mine gets real warms also. Then it cools down again. It's a times when I'm not downloading or doing anything special.

Same thing for me. I have the 64 gb with 4g. Quite warm on the backside. Like the others, it does cool down a bit at times.

16gb AT&T with cellular radio tuned off.

This thing gets hot, my iPad 2 never got hot ever. I don't have a case on it and I'm not using it while it charges. Screen brightness is at full and I'm only browsing the web via wifi.

Makes me concerned that this is going to be a big issue soon...

If it gets hot on the side with no buttons that is the new prosessr. Since the iPad has no fans it uses the back panel to help remove heat. If your worried talk to apple it's under warranty.

I was at my local Apple Store today to ask some questions since I'm brand new to the iPad, and somehow while I was talking to a staff member, it came up that he iPad "gets hot", and she acted as if this was completely normal, and said it had to do with the battery being big.

this is because the ipad 2 and the first ipad only has 25W battery while the new iPad as nearly 50W, thats double the amount!

I highly recommend getting a leather case to help cool the iPad 3 down.

Also concerned about how warm the new iPad feels. Gets uncomfortable after a while. Put an otter box on it today, better but still warm. Hope this is not a major issue

yes thats exactly why, the battery is big to accomodate the 4G capability, if Apply used the original 25W battery as iPad 2, you will be complaining about how fast the battery drains right now.

Mine gets hot under the processor.

Actually, mine gets hot AND the battery drains really fast, faster than on the iPad2 - without doing crazy things, i.e. not gaming or watching movies. On Wi-Fi, mainly opening and closing apps, adding the missing passwords after restore and pretty mundane stuff like writing emails or reading some RSS feeds, playing in iPhoto. And it does get hot, not only warm. I do understand about bigger battery and all, but it does get uncomfortable to hold it, the glass on top even gets pretty hot.

My battery drains pretty fast, too, just doing regular stuff. Almost as fast as my iPhone4 when I use it heavily. I haven't done much.

I asked the Apple Store worker about that, and she told me that I need to let it get down to the battery warning, then fully charge it a few times. She said the battery needs to get used to being charged. Sounds pretty crazy to me, but, that's what she said.

I actually bought the longer charging cord so that I can use my iPad while it's charging, that's how fast it drains. :(

Hopefully she's right, and that this will go away with time. I don't think the "hot" issue will go away, though. Just my opinion. I hold mine on it's back with the smart cover on the back under my hand and I don't feel the heat that way.
