smart cover not working

I got my new iPad yesterday and restored it using my 1st gen iPad's backup.

The smart cover doesn't work. I went to Settings, General and there is no Smart Cover option.

Then someone suggested using a big strong magnet in the upper corner to get the button to show up.

I did that, still no option.

Anyone else having this problem?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.2), i7 16GB RAM

The proper steps to follow if you software is messed up is to:

1) RESET -- do a reset and let the iPad do its thing to fix registry files.

2) RESTORE -- if that doesn't work, do a restore from your iTunes sync

3) RESOLVE -- if that doesn't work, make an appointment with your local Genius Bar or call Apple support. They will ask if you have done the previous 2 steps before they can do anything about it anyway.

These kinds of software glitches can come up all the time, especially if you are restoring from old iPad 1 backups....

Just restore the software.

Had the same problem...but now know why.

First, it has to detect a Smart Cover before that option can be seen.

Second, in many cases its not detecting the magnets in the Smart Cover as the "sensor" in the new iPad seems to have been positioned slightly higher up the iPad.

If you can reposition the lid so its a couple of centimetres higher up, it works fine. Problem seems to not only apply to Smart Cases for iPad 2 but also sellers who touted their cases as "for" or "compatible" without checking (or realising) the sensor position was slightly relocated.

Fortunately, I have two Smart Cases so was able to use the lid from one to test this out on the other case.

That is it. I am now seeing iPad 2 cases on Amazon saying they will fit the new iPad but the on/off feature will not work.

Yep. In some cases, the magnet appears to be in the wrong spot.....just off by 1/4-1/2 inch. I found that out by using a small magnet.......which, by the way, activated the sleep/wake option in settings, Before I did that, it was no where to be found, trust me! I bought a case on Amazon and it fits, but just doesn't work with the sleep/wake function, although they said it would.

Not to be contrarian, but, in fact, the sleep/wake sensor has NOT been moved with the iPad 3 compared to the iPad 2.

What has happened is that Apple has switched to a DIFFERENT TYPE of sleep/wake sensor. A sleep/wake sensor that is senstive to the polarity of the magnet that activates it. Apple even made a running model change to their own Smart Covers to address this at the end of 2011 because they new the iPad 3 was coming.

Everything is explained in this post at my blog (complete with an HD video demonstration):
