How to tell ipad2 from ipad3

How can I tell the difference between an ipad2 and ipad3??

Are there any physical characteristics that are different ?

If buying a used 3 how can I tell it's not a 2??

It's rather hard to tell without an iPad 2 next to you to compare to. While there is nothing physical, you should notice a dictation key (looks like a microphone) on the virtual keyboard.

I am afraid the answer above while correct is not complete, when I read this article I noticed to my horror that my new iPad did not have the dictation symbol, after the initial panic and a call to the shop which was fortunately closed on Sunday I settled down and thought it through.

If the symbol is not showing go to settings...general....keyboard.... and slide DICTATION to on enable it and hey presto the microphone appears. Phew!!! what a relief.
