iPad 3rd gen photos won't sync

Problem if I try to sync photos to my iPad 3 64gb 4G. If I select some or all of my 7300 photos, iTunes either converts a few (9 to 15 pics) syncs them and skips the rest or skips them all entirely , the ones that do sync look stunning on the retina screen though.

I never had this issue with my old iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and my current 4S or my iPad 1 & 2.

I also tried deleting the photo cache multiple times, restoring the iPad 3 from an iCloud backup as well as a slightly older backup through iTunes, I even reinstalled the old iTunes 10.5 and I still had the same photo sync issue.

Yet my iPhone 4S 64gb is syncing my photos through iTunes via a cable & WiFi just fine.

I even tried copying all 7300 photos to an external drive and syncing them from there, hoping a completely different location may work. Managed 150 odd shots before skipping the rest, this problem is completely random.

Out of those shots a few were the wrong image, the thumbnail image was right but when opened full the image was from a completely different folder

I even tried this morning setting my iPad 3 up as a new device instead of restoring from iTunes or iCloud, synced only my photos and nothing else but I had the same issue so this is definitely a bug somewhere, I suspect iTunes.

Again, same photos and I have no issue syncing 7300 shots to my iPhone 4S.

Everything else syncs to the iPad 3 just fine and runs perfectly.

It really does appear to be an iTunes problem. It looks like iTunes times out when trying to convert a significant number of larger resolution photos for transfer to the iPad. Someone thinks they've fixed it, clearly with the new iTunes release, but they have not.

You can get it around it by taking the same photos and resizing them to the iPad 3 resolution - 2048x1536 - and then you can synch as many as you like. I did about 9000 pictures in 46 folders after resizing them.

Take the same folder without resizing and it dies after 5-6 pictures.....

How does Apple not understand the severity and presence of such a problem?

OK, folks, I've registered my complaint directly with Apple support by phone. I was told that the best additional place to report bugs of this type is http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html as this site is monitored by the Apple developers. I've left my flame on this site, and encourage everyone to do the same. We need to carpet bomb the developers to let them know the level of outrage over this utterly inexcusable bug.

I contacted Apple on the same issue, and after escalating within their support network, was told I had a defective iPad. Returned my two day old 3rd gen iPad and waited two weeks for a replacement. Tried syncing my DSLR photos again, only to experience the same issue all over again. Sold my iPad 2 (no syncing issues what so ever) so like many of you, could experience my high quality photos on the new display. Wow, do I ever have buyer's remorse.

How come with all these issues when I spent over 7 hours this week with three different 'senior advisors' and asked them whether this was a known issue they all said no!

I have had masses of problems BUT with little credit to apple support have managed to get 21,000 photos on the new Ipad3 with a 99%+ final success rate.

I did find that completely uninstalling itunes, including the additional programs in the advised order - itunes, quicktime, app soft update, app mob dev supp, bonjour, apple app supp and then reinstalling itunes helped.

I have 31,000 sorted into around 60 subfolders (and lots of sub sub folders which it won't recognise a separate folders on the ipad but never seemed to have a problem importing). So was able to import around 2,000 at a time. Nearly every time it failed the ipod photo cache had the right number of ithmb images but the photos that didn't sync equalled in number the ithmbs with a size of zero bytes and I deleted them. Sometimes it stopped before it even got to that stage but I just synced again .

Deleting the photo cache folder made things worse once I had pictures on the ipad so I never did.

However I still have an issue with memory capacity used. My ipod photo cache is now showing 21,717 files 47GB with about 30 less on the ipad but the memory allocation in itunes is showing 39GB photos and 8GB other. This is an itunes optimisation reduction of 15% compared with the original photos on the computer i.e. 2.7Mb average on computer 2.3Mb on ipad. When I first started doing the sync before it all started going wrong I got up to 16,000 and around 24GB a much better optimisation rate

Any feedback on the size reduction from those who have got photos on the new ipad would be welcome. When I download hi res photos from some of the free apps they look great at around 0.5MB so 2.3Mb average seems excessive - looking at photocache they go up to 8Mb per photo for the ipad.
