Poor wifi reception on new iPad

Well I just found another little glitch in the new iPad and how it authenticates and registers its name in your itunes account. It will show up as an iPad 2 with wifi or wifi with 3g as the case may be. In the scheme of things I guess this is rather small but it just one thing after another, over heating, rotten wifi, power adapters now getting hot, some are just crashing with a error log, longer charging times and shorter battery time.......They really didn't think this one through in the rush to put this wonderful device in our eager hands. Mines going back tomorrow, I've had it and I don't want to here the lame tech response's anymore when its all due to poor quality control, pre-delivery testing, and get it out the door regardless policies. Its like the iPad 2's light leak excesses all over again but worse. Bye Apple bad-Pad.

It shows up as an ipad 2 because you restored from a backup with a device of that name. Please make separate threads for those other issues, or exchange your ipad for a hopefully working model. The one success in this thread is one who exchanged his ipad and has one without problems.

Btw, returning your ipad doesn't send apple any messages, they just count it as a return. Exchanging it under warranty replacement does.

No Sam I did not restore it from an iPad 2 back up. I set it up as a new device. I even cleared it twice to factory defaults and set it up again as a new device after I removed it from my account and it still registers itself as a name of "iPad 2 wifi + 3g" then the name I gave it in parentheses (ITC iPad 3). The first string of characters in quotes I had nothing to do with and is nothing I've ever used as a name and has to be like a generic name in the itunes stores account settings I'd think. Regardless this is my final comment here and I hope everyone gets there issue solved one way or the other ......ds

It's okay, lt caveman. I've been writing on this board, about my iPad 3, which *****! I've been on the phone w/ apple this afternoon, and it's been one thing after another with the iPad 3. I'm curious, after the "restore," whether there will be any difference with wifi reception, and when I exchange it tomorrow, whether I will get better wifi, the same wifi, or another yellow tinted screen!

Well keep us all posted. I'm sure some if not most fus are still interested in how you fare with your exchange. Hope it works out for you. I'll return mine and let the dust settle for a month or two and try again. That's what I had to do when the iPad 2 got with really bad light leaks was exchanged twice with no better results the I got another two months later and it was fine. Using it now as a mater of fact. Oh no, say it isn't so! I came here looking for my problem and I've found it in this thread. iPad 1 worked flawlessly for almost 2 years with ZERO wifi issues and I've had my iPad 3 for 4 days now and it keeps dropping the connection (wifi only iPad 3) in my house. At work I also have the same issues.

Oh but hang on....as I'm typing this I've just discovered something very interesting...

I'm not holding the iPad right now as I usually do, with both hands with the iPad in landscape mode down where the keyboard pops up, and I am holding steady at 2 bars. As soon as I DO hold it as described, without changing the position too much, I drop to only one bar and in fact it drops connection half the time!!!! You have got to be kidding me right? Holding my iPad 3 in the same way as I always did my iPad 1 the wifi reception is very bad!

Please, someone try to replicate this and report back!

Mine is in a case so I'm not touching the metal at any point. I'll try this tomorrow and post results. Are you using yours bare or in a case so I can duplicate the way you are using yours.

I have it in a leather folio case similar to Apple's own folio case that I have on my iPad 1. This truly is a dilemma for me as I've already promised the iPad 1 to a family member and don't want to go back on my word but I'm not sure I can live with this iPad 3 as it is right now. I'm not sure how this can be remedied through an iOS update but I'll keep my fingers crossed that maybe these are isolated occurrences due to faulty hardware and can be remedied with an exchange.

I am betiting hardware myself but who knows. I left my 3 at work but will try what you did and let you know how mine reacts. My problem is not that it drops out so much as it only allows me to move little more than 30 ft from the router before it becomes unusable. The 2 let's me have a stable connection at least 70 away, sometimes more if there are no walls or such. Oh well, guess we'll see what happens......ds

I get exactly the same problem as clipper99, holding it landscape with mute bottom at the bottom, I go gradually from 5 bars to none (then 3G).

Does Apple actually look at these posts?

I'm pretty sure they do. I am going to remove the iPad from my leather folio case when I get home to see if that makes a difference. I have it here right now at work but am reluctant to use it without the case lest I scratch it putting it down. At least I have a nice soft couch at home.....

Sigh. Me, too. iPad 2: full strength. MacBook Pro 2010: full strength. MacBook Pro 2011: full strength. "New" iPad [3]: one dot, if it sees anything at all.

I'm really hoping there is a firmware update about to be released...

Or, for the tin-foil hat crowd: is this a deal Apple cut with VZ/T so that people will start using LTE and data plans?

An update: I had a two-part conversation with an Apple technician, via phone. I did a full factory restore. The low connectivity still remained. She sent me via email, a diagnostic to respond to, for her to evaluate the iPad. She said the numbers looked fine - so clearly she had nothing further to add.

She checked with the nearby store, to see if there were iPad 3- 32gb in stock, to swap out for mine, and scheduled an appointment this afternoon at 3:30pm.

My concerns are:

1. I will get another yellow-tint iPad 3

2. The wifi will still be weak as I move away from the router

3. There will be a hotspot, as others seems to be commenting on, which I have not experienced.

4. Or any combination of the above.

Stay tuned .....

It is my advice to take the old ipad to the store, and test both the old and the new one side by side. If it picks up the wifi signal of the in store network (with cellular data turned off), then you may be good to go, or at least have isolated it to a router-ipad incompatibility issue.

For the rest of you, it might be worth checking if wi-fi levels improve with cellular data turned off.. though I don't think it would.

Oh and apple does not monitor these threads, except occasionally when on a call with applecare if there seems to be a resolution in the thread. But they are not allowed to make responses, it's purely a user to user forum. Call Applecare if you are experiencing heat or wifi issues. With wifi imparticular, it may benefit you to go to the store (genius bar) and demonstrate it.
