Q: Poor wifi reception on new iPad

I am in a hotel with my laptop and new ipad3. The laptop wifi reception is as strong as it gets, but the iPad only registers a weak signal. Anyone else having similar problems? Any suggestions?

Replaced an iPad1 (16 GB, Wi-fi) with an iPad3 (64 GB, Wi-Fi+4G). I've had no issues with wifi signals. In fact, I'd say the reception I have at work has actually improved.

Folks there's only one fix for now. I don't know if you've tried this or not but it's posted here.

In one portion of my office my new iPad consistantly has a very weak signal or none at all (not even showing a wifi network in Settings > Wi-Fi)  while my iPhone 4 and laptop consitantly have a strong working signal.

Last night, I was watching a TV show one room from our access point (Linksys wifi router), WIFI connection was lost, the new iPad presented a few choices of access points, and asked the credential for the same WIFI access point I had set up before (was watching using it before losing the connection).

I didn't have wifi reception problems with the new iPad, however, my download speeds were much slower on the new iPad vs 1st gen iPad, by about half.  I fixed the problem by "reset network settings" in General and by turning off "ask to join networks" under WiFi.  I now have the exact same speeds on both iPads.  I had to do both to get the same speed.  Don't know why, but this worked.

FYI, none of the supposed "fixes" work for me. As far as I can tell all these fixes are rally do is merely do is get you back ON your wifi network, they do nothing for the root problem. If it is simple as an iOS patch then it can't come soon enough for me as I've already given my iPad 1 away.

    Cheers

I feel for u guys. I have my imac 27 and when it was OSX snow leopard it had amazing wifi capability but now on Lion 10.7.3 the wifi is AWFUL!!

Not sure what it is but im assuming it's a software issue too cos my £500 second hand macbook has amazingly STRONG wifi.

I haven't got the ipad 3 yet but i am very keen on buying one. Hopefully it will be a software patch to fix it.

For those having wifi problems, have you tried setting your wifi router to a different channel? These with PC's could try the free inSSIDer utility to see if your neighbours have wifi set to the same channet that you are using, possibly interfering with your network..

Good idea grandpa but I have reception problems everywhere I go, not just at home but I may try when I do get home in a few hours from now.

    Cheers

I have noticed this problem too. I was in my Kitchen and all of a sudden my ipad wifi drops and wont reconect for about a minuet or two. I checked my iphone and it had full wifi signal. After finding it wasnt reconecting i walked up to my routor which is upstairs and held the ipad next to it. Doing this made it reconect and the signal looks okay now. But im sure it will happen again. I would have thought it was a software problem that they will fix with an update.

I've been in network eng for 35 years and while I don't claim to know evrything it's a problem for my new iPad and many others. Taking mine back for a swap or a refund.

Browsing on my new Pad is painfully slow and intermittent signal drops in the exact same space where my iPhone 4 has rock solid reception. Why?

I'm on my SECOND iPad 3 as I returned the first one for overheating issues. This one is actually better but now the wi-fi stinks.  I'm glad I didn't activate the LTE yet. Otherwise, I'm sure I'd be using my data plan and not even realizing it. Think I'm gonna go buy an iPad 2.

At least allow apple to try and fix it.

Have you tried resetting network settings?

I would appreciate it if everyone posts what router they are using, and whether they have tried adjusting the mode.

Received my 32GB WiFi a few hours ago and don't have any WiFi issues as of now. I have an AirPort Extreme. I have the same signal I get on my MacBook Pro in all rooms. Haven't gone out side yet, but I will test later. I ran the speed test I www.speednet.com and got 35.5 Mps down and 8.5 up on Comcast.
