Q: Poor wifi reception on new iPad

I am in a hotel with my laptop and new ipad3. The laptop wifi reception is as strong as it gets, but the iPad only registers a weak signal. Anyone else having similar problems? Any suggestions?

So I just called apple and gave them the youtube link, said it's something their engineers are definitely going to want to see... so we'll see what happens...

I tried my own test with speed test app and put my hands on my iPad just like the video. I wasn't able to stall my wifi connection like the video showed. I don't know what to make of all of this. It's making me think there was a faulty batch produced somewhere and I just got luck and got a great one.

@RyanLucier - Good luck, Ryan.  I was one of the early posters on here - and spent hours on the phone with Apple, and then in the store, comparing multiple units.

I eventually returned my unit - but decided yesterday to purchase a new iPad 3 via Apple online - thinking PERHAPS that a later manufacturing crop might not have the same problem.  Ever the optimist!

I wonder if perhaps the significant increase in battery size is causing problems either with physical clearance around the wifi antenna, or interference, or both.

Mine came from on-line Apple Store. Mine is great. They sold over 3 million over the weekend. Don't know what percentage is having problems but I assume it's minuscule.

On March 18, 2012, I posted:  I got a new iPad 16GB WiFi only on March 16th.  WiFi was cutting in and out so I exchanged it for a new unit.  New unit does not have any WiFi problems.

I lied.  If I do the "death grip", i.e., landscape mode with volume buttons at bottom, I lose my WiFi connection.  If I turn it around, I reconnect; turn to death grip, lose connection.  It's like clockwork . . . or a trained monkey.

Router is about 50 ft down the hallway connecting at N 5 GHz band on Linksys E3000 router.  No problems with original iPad, iPhone4 or other wireless devices.  I don't use a case or cover with the new iPad (and don't plan to so I hope Apple's wonderful and brilliant solution won't be a free case).

I am in Grand Turk at a super fast Internet cafe. Every computer can connect to the wifi network apart me and my friends iPad 3's.

Right now I am posting this on an iPad 2 and it works PERFECTLY! iPad 3 no chance.

I work on a cruise ship so constantly use my device all over the world. This is one of several wifi issues I have had with iPad 3 over the past week.

    APPLE FIX PLEASE!

@Marvso   And what makes you assume the number is miniscule?  Why are you being an apologist for Apple?  As someone who had sufficient problems that I spent hours trying to resolve, and finally returned the unit, your comment was annoying, and trying to diminish a situation that is certainly provoking a lot of people, me included.

Hmmm Gdtobme , I can't replicate that on my iPad 3. I can attest and swear that not all iPads suffer from this affliction. I believe you and the YouTube video posted earlier, but I sure can't get mine to do that. There had to have been a bad batch or something. My connection is flawless in every scenario.

I am not being an apologist for Apple. Just telling you my experience. I believe you and others are having problems with your iPad connect issues. But it must be from a bad batch and it's not the norm. I would return your iPad and get a different one. I can attest mine is AWESOME in regards to wifi connectivity. The signal strength has faltered from three bars no matter wher I roam in an 80 ft radius.

You have tried the 5ghz band that most everyone uses. You only used the 2.4 ghz band.

Bad news guys... the new iPad 3 does the EXACT same thing. This is a design flaw, unless I'm *that* unlucky to get a white and black ipad 3 both with the same issue.

I've just uploaded a youtube video to show you the results on the white iPad 3:

    http://youtu.be/0ZeJhVOXQSA

How Apple ever missed this, I don't know.

I tried 2 from on-line store and 2 from the walk in. Same poor wifi and three had screen problems. There are issues and maybe you got luckily. But until you try the 5ghz band you not really fully tested yet.....
