Q: Poor wifi reception on new iPad

I am in a hotel with my laptop and new ipad3. The laptop wifi reception is as strong as it gets, but the iPad only registers a weak signal. Anyone else having similar problems? Any suggestions?

I just got my ipad 3... After about 2 days of using it, i have to say it is absolutely perfect...

I did a small test on it and i will post it up later for you guys to see...

Overall i'm starting to suspect that my ipad 2 has wifi problems now...

For all you wondering, i bought mine from Hong Kong... 32GB wifi only because that was the only one available...

"Apple contact me, they told me they re-flashed to firmware on the system and could not "

Yep, that is what Apple did for me - worked great - for about 5 days, then started happening again, so now a week later I've reset my router DIR-655 to "g" only so that it sorta works. Hope you have better luck a week from now.

Fiinally, some acknowledgement from Apple and a bit of vindication for users here

Apparently, these issues were limited to wifi only models.  This was my case.    I returned my iPad and will wait for these issues to be resolved.    I may pick up an LTE model to see if it improves the situation.

Only the people that called Apple Care and complaint to the stores are the one that made a difference, not the ones whining here!

And only wifi only ipad might be affected.

Sounds harsh, but you have a valid point....luckily I decided to get with a 4g connection as well so no problem here.

I'm afraid this (ie. Wifi models only) is not the whole truth in this issue.

I had a WiFi+4G (64G) iPad which also was affected. I returned it back to store...

To add to what Harmis said - a handful of wifi only members that have posted here have had no problems. There have been a good few members on claiming that they have to switch 4G off so if wifi goes off then they won't eat up their data plan.

To me - Wifi only aren't the only ones affected

    Me too!  I have 2x (new) iPad 64GB wi-fi & 4G.

Got them the week they were released and both have very bad wi-fi performance.

I tested them on both an Apple Airport Extreme (4th) and a Netgear DGND3700.

2.4GHz network is slightly better than 5GHz network on both routers.

5GHz N network barely reaches 15 meters on the iPad, but significantly better for other devices.

All wi-fi channels are clear of neighboring networks and interference free.

Airport Extreme ended up providing marginally better throughput and connect speeds, so I'm using that.

3/4G speeds are better but that's an expensive option only for use away from wi-fi connectivity.

Really happy with the Mobile data speed, disappointed with wi-fi performance.

It's definitely not just the wi-fi only model.

All in all, it's not enough to make me take them to the Apple store (just yet), although I'd be interested to check their connection speed in the Apple store.

    I love them!

Fantastic products that keep on giving and getting better.

Can't believe how much paper and ink I've saved!  Not to mention all the other benefits of owning one (or more).

My "wild guess" is that this WiFi problem will finally be recognised as a HW-fault and therefore cannot be fixed by any firmware. Symptoms are exactly the same as in iPhone earlier.

Therefore, in iPhone we got free bumpers, in iPad we'll get free covers, unfortunately...

I never called Apple as previously posted. They called me from these posts. The wifi + 4G units are affected as well. Also see previous posts.

I have a 64gb Verizon 4G iPad and it is constantly dropping the wifi connection whereas my original iPad, iPad 2 and wifi only new iPad don't. It doesn't rejoin automatically either, you have to manually reconnect each time.

I have a 32GB WiFi new iPad and have connectivity issues all of the time.  I lose signal at work in my office and all over my house.  I have a 35Mbps feed from Verizon Fios and a brand new Airport Extreme and should be able to have blazing speed, but whenever I try to use a SpeedTest app I can't get above 5 Mbps.  I also lose the signal all of the time and need to shift around the iPad on my bed or couch.

I bought the WiFi model to use with an LTE Jetpack, assuming I would be better off with the higher speeds that wi-fi can afford, but I seem to be wrong.  I'll have to email Apple later.

I don't think that a case alone will solve this though.  I have a Bear Motion case on mine right now.  That case covers the entire iPad except for the screen and the buttons.  This does keep the WiFi strength meter from dropping down, but my download speed is still cut in half when I am in the next room from my router.  The only way I've found to make it work reasonably well is to hold it in the other landscape position, with the volume rocker facing upward.
