Apr 6, 2012 12:19 AM in response to stlsteveby Franky44,OK, I am going to throw my 2 cents to the table on this story. I own a iPad 1 and the new iPad. With the iPad 1 I never got any kind of issue as far as poor Wifi till I updated to iOS 5. As soon as I updated the firmware, on the Wifi Settings the "Forgot this Network" options disappeared. To get it back I have to reset the Network Settings. At this point, (after the Network reset) If I click the "Forget this network" button and I reconnect to my home WiFi the option disappears again.
The new iPad. The new iPad behaves in the same way as the iPad 1 (after updating it to iOS 5) with the same poor WiFi and the same "Forget this Network" issue which in my opinion are related.
My New iPad experiences the "Death Grip" also which in my humble opinion has to do with its design..so there is not a lot we can do about this.
For both iPads the Wifi Signal keeps flickering from 2 to 1 to 0 bars (every 5-8 seconds or 5-15 min...it depends I don't know even myself on what!) on the same place in my house. If the iPads are near to my Wifi I have no problems. My WIFI Modem is a Netgear DG834 b/g
***This is how I FIXED the issue Permanently.***
In my Modem options I chose the G mode only, opting out the B Mode. After that I reconnected the iPads.
After this:
iPad 1 wifi signal is rock solid on bar 2
New iPad is rock solid on bar 2. Sometimes it even goes to bar 3!!!
Hope this will help somebody!!!
PS: In my humble opinion the issue has to do with the Firmware only which is somwhat incompatible with some modems

Apr 6, 2012 4:26 AM in response to aclockworkorangutanby It_caveman,The only that give you any detail is the Apple Airport Config App. It will only work if you have an Apple Etreme, Time Capsule or Express router though. The upside is the detail on connections to Any device Apple or noT that it provides.

Apr 6, 2012 5:31 AM in response to stlsteveby URSOLUSOB,Switching to G is not a fix. A fix means the problem has been resolved, i.e. a solution. This unit is designed to take advantage of N speeds. Taking your network back half a decade of technology to make the issue go away is not a solution. Why would you want to do this other than as a temporary fix, and only when you have no other N capable devices on the network, is beyond me. Personally, I'll deal with the dropouts until a solution is available and NOT degrade my network performance which handles 5 other devices, almost all running N speeds.
And again, this is not exclusive to the wifi only models. VZW LTE 32GB model here. No real speed issues, but persistent dropouts even when network is shown and available.

URSOLUSOB,
I have the same verizon model as you and arrived a solution by simply explicilty entering the wifi details rather than letting the iPad find the wifi. I list all the symtoms as well as screenshots on the solution here:

Apr 6, 2012 8:21 AM in response to stlsteveby VAbarb,I have the same problem. New ipad 32G wifi only - Received my iPad a week ago and have had the same intermittent wifi problems... other wireless networks show but my phone hotspot does not. Yes I went thru all of the logical checks... is phone broadcasting SSID, is security on ( I have tried with both on and off), change broadcast channel, turn ipad wireless on/off, reset ipad wireless, stand on one foot and hold ipad in air....etc.... none fix it.
I called apple support and went thru problem with them and was told to take it into store. I got case number and went last night. Genius looked down nose at me when I explained problem because when he looked at it - it showed all networks in store.. I described the nature of the intermittent problem and not seeing all networks being broadcast and he wanted to know where on apple site I saw that they said it was a problem...(because clearly I did not know what I was doing since I could not recreate it for him)... I gave him case number and he took iPad and reloaded it.... told me that if it failed again to try taking security off wireless.... despite the fact that I told him I had tried that already...
Soooooo today - again it is not working (with an open hotspot)... back to apple store.. I don't know why it was not swapped out....anyone else with new updates....

Apr 6, 2012 8:22 AM in response to VAbarbby Mike95,VAbarb,
I'm on my iPhone now typing this so I can type to many details. I had the exact same problem as you describe. In my case, as well as a previous person on this forum. It may be isolated to wireless-n network. Connecting manually requires specifying the correct security. I had difficulty connecting initially when setting it up manually but ultimate realized I was selecting the wrong security. I now connect fine every time automatically.
My post above lists all the symptoms I've had and I no longer have after connecting successfully manually. The key thing is to check to see if iOS remembers your connection by checking for the "forget this network" button. If you see this button then you should be good.
