Reminder: One of the earlier posts here indicated that WEP authentication was known to be "buggy" and that WPA or WPA2 should be used.  Since a hotspot is mentioned above, it may well use WEP.

i've read online that the wifi issue is an interior design flaw and cant be fixed with a software update, the new ipad battery is 70% bigger so it covers the wifi antenna causing intermittant connection and poor reception. i think apple should recall all new ipads and give us macbook airs.

I am reading a lot of these posts & I am getting a little frustrated because it is not just the Wi-Fi only iPads having connect problems, like I posted yesterday I have the Wi-Fi, 4G LTE & I have found when downloading an app via Wi-Fi it takes anywhere between 30 min to an hour just to download one app even when it shows that I have full Wi-Fi connection.  Apple needs to acknowledge that it's not just the Wi-Fi only iPads.  My fear about exchanging is, what happens to all my content that I have already downloaded, can anyone answer that for me (without being rude, cause I'm not electronically stupid I just have never owned an Ipad before now).  Would it all be saved to the cloud or would I lose things like pics & stuff like that?

Taking that long to  download an app does *not* sound right.  You should get this app, check and discuss your findings with others: http://itunes.apple.com/app/speedtest-net-mobile-speed/id300704847?mt=8

If you sync your iPad with iTunes, it will backup most of your stuff, but each app handles data differently, due to the "sandbox" (issolated) nature of the app design.  If you keep your data in "the cloud", this is less of an issue (though raises security implications).

Anyway, your WiFi is *not* right.  Wireless is always tricky, and it sounds like a "bug-fix" version of the iPad software is needed to make it easier, but the only "design" problem I've read about to give you symptoms like you describe is the "death-grip", because of where the antenna seems to be.  Try keeping your hand away from the side that has the "home" button on it.  Most mobile devices seem to have a "bad spot" where you don't want to hold it.

Apple will normally assist you with moving your data over.  It's actually quite transparent wtih iCloud unlike before. With regards to your apps, you already purchased them so they are available to redownload onto any device you use with the same Apple ID.  It's a shame this is your first iPad and you have this minor issue.  At least I don't have the speed issue, but I do have the connection issue disconnecting and not remembering the wifi connection.

I strongly believe this is a software issue becuase some people have reported this after upgrading their 1st generation iPad to iOS 5.1, however I can't substantiate their claim as I can my own experience.  In my case, I've had AT&T 32GB iPad3 & Verizion 32GB iPad3 and in both cases the wifi disconnects requiring me to reenter password and reconnect.  I describe all the variou scenarios here and the workaround I employed which works great.

Normally apple issues software updates within the first few weeks to handle anomalies once they get a handle on them.  If I had one of the faulty wifi bandwidth issues I would certainly troubleshoot that to see if I can find a workaround for that one too...but I don't have that issue.

    Good luck.

I am having the same problems and I got my Ipad 3 errr HD....whatever they are calling it, on Monday.  I can see wi fi's to connect, shows connected....then when i open up facebook or twitter....error "cannot connect to server, close the application and try again"....this is the message.  However, at home....no problem.....i smell phone company involvement to get you all to need the 3G/4G data plan additions so they can make money too.  I will be going to the Apple store tomorrow to get a replacement if I can.

    A not so happy apple.

Thank you, I appreciate the advise & as soon as I get home I will try this on my iPad.  I don't think I am having issues with the death grip problem because while it's downloading I am not usually holding it, unless the case I have on it is affecting the connection.

    Just an update for me..

I have been following this thread since the beginning.. my son and I have been through 4 different iPad3s (2 each 64GB LTE - Verizon and ATT).  These were purchased at an Apple store in NC and exchanged at an Apple store in SC. All 4 have the same weak WiFi issue, particularly when touched or lightly held landscape mode (Home button on Left).. they work better with Home button on right, though every case I have is designed to be held with Home button on left (case opening at top).

This week, I purchased a 5th iPad3 at a Target store in NC (different city). Same issues... sigh.

All these iPads were screaming fast (>25MB) as long as you are in close proximity to the router and able to run on N-band, but strength/speed falls off more rapidly than any of my other iDevices as you move away ...  Thats why its next to impossible to demo this in an Apple store..

As a temporary workaround, this week I bought a Netgear WiFi range extender (WN3000RP) just so I can still read my email in the same location I used to with my iPad1. It works great, but it is a band-aid, and I wouldn't have had to buy it had I kept the iPad 1...

Note that I have not had any issues with any of these units as reported by others regarding connection failures (other than loss of signal) or inability to remember passwords, etc.. I am using an ASUS RT-N56U Dual Band Gigabit router with the latest firmware.... though I can also duplicate this problem at the local Starbucks (on the patio, not inside) just as well...

I've had a case open with Apple support since 3/23, with numerous discussions, so not just relying on this thread to express my concerns. I really want this device to work - it is great in every other aspect...

Let me add my problem to the list. I have had iPhones from the beginning up to my current 4, and the iPad 1 and this problem has never been this pronounced until I recently got my current iPad 3rd generation 4LTE ATT (aka iPad 3) While my home router (Airport Extreme, all firmware updates applied) has always had 'weak spots" in my home, the iPad 3 cannot find my network at all unless I am fairly close to the router, even with an Airport express to boost the signal. It is fine (though I can't assess speed) in my office sitting in a 5-15 foot range of my Westell router, at home, no go on the ground floor (Router is on the upper floor.

Please add my name to the list of those affected and keep me posted on any outcomes

The Express does not "boost the signal" as maximum signal strength is limited by law.  If placed in a stratetic location, the Express repeats the signal to cover an area that the original signal can not reach.

I wish Mike95's solution really works. At least for me it worked for about 1 hour, then back to trouble. I hae tried every fix and none worked for more than an hour.

    Jermil05,

Do you see the "forget this network" button for your connection?  You have to make sure connect in a way where this button shows up.  Once it's shows up, as it should under normal circumstances, it's an indication the setting is saved and will be reused.  if you do not see the button it will not reconnect on it's own.  I have Verizon 16GB & Verizion 32GB, both with the same issue and both have been resolved with the workaround.

Apple 'captures' new iPads due to WiFi complaints

    http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/05/new-ipad-wifi-issues/

Try taking your defective iPads back to the store and they will exchange it.
