The Apple TV does not support true HD at all. Furthermore you will not find true HD contained in any of the movies that are available from the iTunes Store.

I'm sorry I was unable to provide information that would've made you happy. The truth of the matter is that the Apple TV is more about convenience than quality, however quality has improved since the first Apple TV was introduced.
Whilst Blu-ray disks are exceptional in quality, there is nothing to replace the convenience of clicking and playing a movie with no waiting time whatsoever.

I agree that convenience is the name of e game. However quality and ultimate purity of sound will always trump mediocrity. Indeed to marry convenience to quality tremendous strides have been achieved in sound reproduction in the home using SSDs, DACs, and using iTunes+"Remote" on my iPad to listen to serious music. We just need to push for the same with video+sound as convergence of all media is inevitable.

Good to hear your thoughts from across the Pond.
