Recording with VST plugin in garageband

Hi - I have recorded with real synths using my Safire USB audio interface with no issue. It also looks like it is totally fine for me to use the Garageband software synths and record with them using a MIDI keyboard. I seem to be having a problem when I use an external VST plugin, like Absynth. I can hear the synth through my speakers, but when I try to record it is very odd. I can see the notes on the track, but I can't hear them. I also don't see the signal on the left of the track. This leads me to believe maybe there is some sort of output that I do not have right in Absynth. Any idea why I can't record with these VST plug ins. The track name still says grand piano, (when I start I do new track, virtual instrument.

Any idea what i s going on here?
