Q: Kernel_task eating up my cpu

Hello, i have a mid-2009 MBP 2.26 GHz running lion. I've been having a problem with my kernel_task since about a month. Here's how it looks: Screen Shot 2012-03-18 at 11.16.34 AM.png
As you can see my kernel_task is eating up my cpu (over 80%) creating a very bad lag.
I've tried everything to fix it and nothing worked(resetting my pram and smc, reinstalling mac osx lion...).
Also, you might wanna note that when i run my MBP in safe mode kernel_task drops to less than 3% and my computer runs smoothly.

Any anwser would be apreciated, thanks

I uninstalled Jaksta but I didn't get any improvement after rebooting. And I can't make a Genius appointment because I don't live in the U.S

Now, that you're familiar with Terminal, let's try another command

    ps -cx

This should list processes currently running in your name. With any luck, we may be able to figure out which ones could be causing the problem.

How can I know if my Mac is experiencing a faulty temperature [sensor]?

    I already answered that question.

    (1) The result show processes running for your account. Unfortunately, I can only be of limited assistance, because I'm not using Lion. At any rate, there's nothing there that wasn't expected. You have three tabs open in Chrome, one using Flash, so I wonder -- did you try restarting and then checking kernel_task before launching Chrome?

    (2) Let's try

    ps -acx

This should show all processes, not just those running as you. Maybe we can find something there.

    (3) Another thing you can try -- just to eliminate some hardware issues -- is to check your hard disk using Disk Utility (verify disk, not verify permissions) and run the Apple Hardware Test.

    <http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509>

I don't know if you can use AHT with Lion on your machine, but you should have it on the original install DVD which came with your Mac.

There's nothing in the listing that draws my attention (which doesn't mean that one of those processes isn't the issue). But I'm a bit intrigued by these two. Stackshot is a debugging tool, and, AFAIK, it's not running by default (perhaps it is in Lion, I don't know). So what is it doing there? As to com.apple.dock.extra, I've no idea what it is and a quick googling didn't reveal much, except that it might have something to do with Lion.

I've also thought about downgrading to snow leopard, do you think this would help fix the problem?

I've no idea; but, in your place, I'd rather do a clean re-install of Lion. Only if the problem occurred in a fresh, factory-settings install, would I consider downgrading.

Do you tried to make a new admin user account? I made one and I'm not seeing any kernel_task strange activity as before (it was eating 770MB RAM). You only need to make a backup and paste into new admin account.

Have you checked or noticed any issues with your battery? I have been working on some unibody macbooks and noticed when the battery is not plugged in they kernel task goes crazy just as you say. This is with a fresh install of lion or snow leopard and all updates and no third party software installed. Once the battery was connected it began acting normal again. perhaps a sensor in your battery has failed or you have a thrid party battery installed? Hope this helps you out.

Okay, I have a really slow startup, once it is ready, I used the activity monitor to see what is causing this. It is this kernal_task thingy, I followed the instructions. The following are the response from the terminal. Can anyone please tell me what is causing my slow start up after my clean installation of OS X Lion??

If anyone is still having issues like this, be sure to run Disk utility and verify your boot volume. In many cases, the cause of kernel_task taking up large amounts of CPU time is a corruption of the boot volume.

Booting from another volume, like your OS X install DVD or TechTool eDrive, will allow you to repair the boot volume if it has issues.

After repairing the boot volume you should find that on your next restart your system has again become fast and kernel_task is taking no more than 0.5% of your CPU.

    Hope this helps,

    Tomas-MacBook-Pro:~ Tomas$

System setup/peripherals order of connection: I have a ’12 non-Retina MacBook Pro > Thunderbolt Display > Seagate GoFlex Desk Thunderbolt adapter w/ HD connected > 20” Cinema Display daisy chain.  All of which have been working flawlessly for since having purchased the setup last July.

Any and all assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you for your time and consideration.
