Q: Kernel_task eating up my cpu

i have a 13inch macbook pro and i am facing a similar problem as the previous person.. i had deleted all my data and reinstalled software without any data.. still my kernal task was showing the same amount of usage.. so i used time machine to restore all my data and used the following steps you adviced.. please help me

Sometimes Kernel Task may eat about 10 - 15% or RAM.

But if it eats more, than it rather looks like a Mac OS X issue and we'd recommend reinstalling it.

I've been noticing recently that my fan goes crazy and kernel_task AND fseventsd both are listed as taking 70%-80% CPU.  (I assume that means that fseventsd is a child of kernel_task somehow, since otherwise the total > 100%)

This may not be the case with the OP or others, but I have always noticed that when this happens, I have Skype open, and once I quit it things calm down after a minute or two.  This is true when I'm on video calls, and of course high CPU usage might be normal during a wifi video call (but that doesn't explain fseventsd I think, since that's some kind of event logging code I believe?), but it seems to persist after a video call as well.  So if you find your fan high and fseventsd chewing up CPU, try quitting skype if it's open.

Would love to know why Skype uses fseventsd and whether this is normal behaviour or something else is wrong.

Hey Jamie.

I don't fully understand all the log stuff in your post, but I notice that you seem to have Skype installed.  Can you say whether Skype was running when you noticed the fan action?  I had that problem and I seem to be able to resolve it by quitting Skype (takes a minute or two for the fan to calm down).
