iPad 3 charging issues

I have had my shiny new iPad plugged in overnight with it's included iPad charger (it was displaying some context for some of that).

I have just woken up and it's only at 39%!!!! Now I know that it's meant to take longer to charge but that is unbelievable!?

As I said I'm using the lead and charger it came with, the only exception is I'm also using a usb extension lead inbetween as the plug is quite far away. I used the same lead with my iPad 2 every night and it charged fine and fast.

It also kept displaying not charging when plugged into my PC (which is definitely high powered ports).

Should I be booking a genius bar appointment do you think!?

Thanks!

... but I have four Apple iDevices and only iPod 4 gen (iOS 5.1) has this 97% problem. No matter how long would you charge it, it is always % dropping from 100% to 97% after unplug. This is battery fault in my opinion.

@Keeper 2: Try to reformat battery (drain to 0% and charge to full several times) and if there is no improvement, place your complaint to Apple.

I am so PO'd over the slow charging, I'm considering returning it. I didn't pay over $600 to have something that charges all day and only goes up to about 80%. I'm talking 14 hrs here. Its the same with the ipad 2 charger. However, whenever I plug in my iPad 2 with ANY charger, it charges full in a few hours.

Also, I heard all over tv about how the pictures looked with the iPad 3. I put it side by side with my iPad 2 and the pictures are identical. Can anyone tell me why?

Very frustrated........

If your iPad won't charge above 80%, replace it. There's little reason to be frustrated with the new iPad. If it doesn't meet your expectations or needs, return it. My new iPad does take longer to charge (about 16-17% an hour, vice 20% an hour with my original iPad), and I'll admit that while the new screen is beautiful, it's not nicer enough to replace an iPad 2; however, its performance is a great improvement over my first generation iPad. It meets my needs just fine.

The only reason that a normally functioning new iPad would take longer than six hours to recharge would be that some front and center app is substantially consuming the available power from the charger, preventing the battery from soaking up the juice.

You can still return the new iPad and replace it with a new iPad 2. The performance is virtually identical, but since it doesn't have the new retina display or LTE chip, it doesn't need the new larger battery, so it charges at the old rate, which you apparently find a better fit for your needs. Waiting another year for a next generation lower power LTE chip, or potentially better battery technology that doesn't work quite at the technology edge that so frustrates you might satisfy you better.

Agree with you Tinman. Don't understand the thought process on some of these assinine responses. Making fun of a health issue? Wonder how they would react if someone made fun if they had a health problem. "Haha...your blind. Maybe you should get a Braille tablet...haha!". Sheesh....

Regardless, there are trade offs with the iPad 3. Most notably the longer charging and shorter battery life. There are ways to mitigate both but there's no denying the physics. You can try resetting your iPad 3 as some have mentioned this has helped improve charging. But if you've tried that or feel you have a defective unit, I would agree with Dave and replace it. Both the 2 and 3 are great devices. Get what makes you happy.

I changed my charging/data cable to the heavy duty Griffin XL 10W 2.1A cable. As it's 3m long, I have It connected to iPad most of the time. I have on couple of occasion connected it when battery power down to 60% during usage and battery charged back up to 100% within a couple of hours! I personally think the cable used by apple is not up to the job!! That's why they are so short in length, so not too much current is lost!

I bought a new Ipad a couple days ago, and it came with 80% battery life, so I just kept using it to configure, download a few apps, surf the web and e-mail until the battery dropped to almost nothing so I could fully charge it . Last night it was with 1% and I turned it off and plugged the charger that came with it, hopping to wake up and have it fully charged . But my surprise was that when I turned it on, the battery showed only 80% . So i plugged it in again and while using to post here and get a couple of e-mails, it is charging at a rate of 1% very 7 minutes or so. Does anybody knows what happend here? And if it is he case of getting a new one ? Thx guys.

The charging process for an iPad 3 is slow and will not work at all with any of the 6 ft cables my wife and I use for our iPhones, nor those I bought subsequently which claim to be for charging an iPad 3.

I spent 75 minutes on the Apple helpline while the operator tried to think of all kind of solutions. She seemed in despair.

There is a problem and it needs sorting.

The Apple chargers don't work well at all, if at all, and especially not with any extension USB cables.

This is what I've been using for months, and it works fantastically. It's a hard wired cable to the wall wart with the iPad dock connector at the end. And it's super cheap. You'll be thrilled with it. Trust me.
