iPad 3 charging issues

I have had my shiny new iPad plugged in overnight with it's included iPad charger (it was displaying some context for some of that).

I have just woken up and it's only at 39%!!!! Now I know that it's meant to take longer to charge but that is unbelievable!?

As I said I'm using the lead and charger it came with, the only exception is I'm also using a usb extension lead inbetween as the plug is quite far away. I used the same lead with my iPad 2 every night and it charged fine and fast.

It also kept displaying not charging when plugged into my PC (which is definitely high powered ports).

Should I be booking a genius bar appointment do you think!?

Thanks!

Interesting read, seems after some serious testing its very clear apple should have (or should now in the future) release a better charger. One that speeds up times but also crucially allows it to be heavily used while still getting a decent charge.

Having to think about power all the time is not a very apple experience...!

Although the charge time is disappointing to anyone that has used an iPad 1 or iPad 2, I don't think there's much Apple could have done about this to re-engineer the charger. I'm no charger or battery expert, but I think if they tried to up the 10w charger to 15w or 25w then I think they would have had to have changed the power circuits and that would mean that you wouldn't be able to sync it easily with a PC or Mac. Keeping the same 10w charger means you can still do this.

I think we'll all have to live with having to ensure we keep it topped up as much as possible so that when we're not near a plug socket we can use it for up to 10 hours and then let it recharge (longer) over night to bring it back to it's full capacity.

One other thing to mention that as charger times are now around double of the iPad 2, that also means a lot of battery chargers we may use that (in my case) would allow me to do a 30%-100% charge will now not give 70% charge and most likely drop and only give a 35% top-up charge. Again not ideal, but if we want things like Retina and better graphics performance (which we all must admit is amazing compared to iPad 2) then there's always something we have to suffer to get that. In this case for the iPad 3rd Generation it's the charging time and the heat it generates.

My charging is very poor - even using the supplied plug and cable - only charges in standby / sleep mode - switched on it holds current charge; any use causes charge to drain even when plugged in (and with no location services, mobile data or bluetooth).

I have overheating issues as well.

Have logged an aftercare case and have a Genius appt booked.

I just got mine yesterday and used it until it reached 17% then I started charging while surfing Safari with maybe 6 apps running in the background and it took 20+ minutes to charge it up to 18%. I also did this while using only 1 app open (Safari) and still it took 20+ minutes for the charge to go up by 1%. THIS IS RIDICULOUS! My bluetooth is off and so is my cellular services. I'm going to close all the apps and let it charge while the screen is locked. Hopefully by 5pm today it will be fully charged. If not, I'm going to light Apple's a** on fire!

I've noticed a couple oddities with the charging system. The first thing I noticed was sometimes the charge would continue to drop when the iPad was first plugged in. Then it would start to go up again. I haven't been able to come up with a consistent way to get the device to discharge when plugged in. I have watched entire movies on Netflix with WiFi and the battery came off 100% to about 97% then it went back to 100% and stayed there. Today I was using the MLB app listening to a baseball game (audio streaming only) using LTE with GameDay (graphical representation of the game that stays up, it doesn't allow the device to sleep). My charge went from 100% down to 65%. I stopped the MLB app, killed it, rebooted the iPad. I unplugged and re-plugged the jack and the 10W brick. One thing I noticed was that the brick was "Cold". That is not right. If the iPad is charging the brick should be at least a little warm. The lower the charge in the iPad the warmer the brick should get (up to a point anyway). That tells me that no current was flowing. Once I turned everything back on and plugged in the brick the iPad started charging again. After a 10~15 minutes the charge went up 6%. I touched the brick and it was warm.

I am beginning to wonder if there is a thermal overload somewhere either in the brick or the iPad that is stopping the charging process. I'm leaning toward somekind of overload in the brick but I don't have a way to check at this time.

The thing I noticed...

I have several generic ipod cables due to the excessive cost of the "apple" cable. Never had issues with them except with my new iPad. The old iPad (gen 1) never notice a problem with charging.

On the generic cable: (display off)

started at 60% charging

@ 35 mins -> 64%

@ 63 mins -> 67%

@ 97 mins -> 70%

On the "Apple" cable: (display off)

starting at 70% charging

@ 43 mins -> 81%

@ 80 mins -> 90%

so in my case the cable makes a difference... still slow but make sure you are using the cable provided.

The new iPad charge takes very long time. It takes twice as much time compare to iPad 2. I understand that new iPad has Built-in 42.5-watt-hour rechargeable lithium-polymer battery but why is the charger still 10 watts? I think this issue should be taken care of as soon as possible. Apple should replace all new iPad chargers with a new one.

My new iPad, which should have been called the 3 so we would have something to refer to, is worthless if we can't charge it. I also plugged mine in last night and woke up about 8 hours later with about 75%. I thought I must have unplugged it accidently. Then I plugged it in in my office today and watched it take about an hour to go from 32% to 33%. Different charger than at home. This was my iPad 2 charger. I sure hope the can get this fixed soon.
