iPad 3 charging issues

I have had my shiny new iPad plugged in overnight with it's included iPad charger (it was displaying some context for some of that).

I have just woken up and it's only at 39%!!!! Now I know that it's meant to take longer to charge but that is unbelievable!?

As I said I'm using the lead and charger it came with, the only exception is I'm also using a usb extension lead inbetween as the plug is quite far away. I used the same lead with my iPad 2 every night and it charged fine and fast.

It also kept displaying not charging when plugged into my PC (which is definitely high powered ports).

Should I be booking a genius bar appointment do you think!?

Thanks!

@Rob_2506

If you have an older Mac you may have only a 5W output, it will take forever to charge the iPad because that's half the power of the USB adapter that was shipped with you iPad. I also looked at that other adapter on the link. It is pretty much the same power output at the Apple USB Adapter. The Apple is 5.1 VDC at 2.1 A. I don't think it will help you. It has 5 stars form one person in 2010. That's an iPad 1.

Try using the USB adapter that came with you iPad and see if it does any better.

Batterygate!!! That's exactly what this is, Bellatone!

While there are some iPad users, who admittedly, are not using the cable and adapter that came with the iPad 3 and complaining about the non-charging issue, the posts from those who are assuming that ALL of us are NOT using the cable and adapter that came with the device and/or ONLY charging it via the USB, really bother me! THAT IS NOT THE PROBLEM or the ISSUE here!! You know what they say about "a-s-s-u-m-e"??

I almost never charge any device via USB, unless it's necessary. I keep my devices plugged in while using them (except my iPhone), with the devices original cable and adapter pluged into a wall outlet, every moment I can to preserve battery power.

I am and have been, since day 1, using the cable and adapter that came with the brand new iPad 3 right out of the box and I am having charging issues. My iPad is either not charging at all while in use or it is charging very, very slowly. I am also experiencing the battery power running down faster than any other device I have ever used and I am not using it to play games, I haven't downloaded or watched a single movie or song yet, and I always only have 1 app running at a time. I know that there are apps that run in the background and, yes, I do have wi-fi turned on. But come on people!!!! I love my Apple iPhone, MacBook Air and iPad, but really? seriously? A $700 device should NOT require NOT using it to fully charge and should not drain the battery at the rate it does. I also do not feel that I should have to BUY another cable/adapter to get a saitsfactory result when the expensive device should have come with one to begin with. So if the solution is to buy another adapter, then I'll just return th eiPad for a full refund, thank you.

Also, to the poster who said,

"a few of us have done some major troubleshooting and think that the defective models are coming from the units that were produced in late February to the first week of March"

This just doesn't hold up. I went to the link in the post and found my iPad's date of production to be "Production Week" 2 (January). So it's not just those produced in late Feb to early March. Sorry.

What about this possible scenario?

I believe it was mentioned somewhere that at the very beginning of production Apple was using Sharp and LG as well as Samsung for the display portion but they couldn't maintain a high level of consistency so Apple switched to Samsung entirely. Perhaps the earlier Sharp and LG versions, if they are out there, are functioning properly but the newer Samsungs aren't, or vice versa.

There are also articles now written by Consumer Reports, Information Weekly, and other sites on the issue. I would love to direct you to them but Apple removed that post. Google it.

My personal hotspot won't activate either for some reason, it just spins and spins forever, but that's an issue I'm not really concerned with until the other ones are resolved.

To conclude, like one of the articles mentioned.... If the new iPad is showing double the power draw as the iPad 2 but only has a 70% larger battery, well then you can do the math and see why the charger isn't charging it while in use.

1. maybe They had too many chargers produced for IPAD2, so they decided not to make newer chargers for IPAD3. - to save on costs and engineering (sychronizing and charging) issues.

2. maybe they wanted to save on re-designing circuit costs... so battery charging circuits were not being taking into account when they designed the new electronic circuits.

3. For quicker charging time:
a) They would probably need a thicker wire to prevent overheating of the wire itself during charging if they were to provide a 42.5W charger.
b) a bigger Watt charger
c) possibly upgrade the existing electronic circuits that charges the battery.

Watt / Voltage = Amps
10 W / 110V = 0.091Amps
iPad 2 housed a formidable 25 watt-hour Li-ion battery
(charging time for ipad2 is 4-6 hours?)

*Using the same 10W charger, it would theoratically take 8~12hours to fully charge IPAD3 but apparently it takes longer than that according to user reflected results.

unless they come out with a 20W or 25W charger...

25W / 110V = 0.227Amps

42.5W / 110V = 0.386 Amps

The messed up charging time might be due to the new retina display, etc... which brought changes to the electronic circuit design etc... BUT that doesnt give the excuse for making the end users SUFFER

I am going to cancel my pre-ordered IPAD3 which is supposed to be a gift for my wife... dont want a GIFT becoming a NUISIANCE

I have production week of "10 (March)" and a wifi only black 32gb, and I do not have any charging issues. I can charge it from 0 to 100% in about 5.5 hours, it seems pretty consistent at 18% or so per hour.
That charging is done in sleep mode with notifications and location services turned off, and using the supplied cable.
At 100% brightness it will not really charge while using it, keeps pretty much the same, but at 50% brightness it will charge slowly while using it.

I do however have something of a heat issue.
I am using a digital food thermometer (I know not the best way) but I have already seen temps above 103 degrees in the hot corner.
So no charging or battery life issues, but the heat issue.

I am having similar issues re charging times. Yesterday morning, I drained the battery down to 5% and plugged into the wall charger at 8:30am. By 5:00pm iPad was only charged up to 85%. Also, I noticed that the charger was quite hot. There were apps running in the background, but none used internet access.

This morning my battery was 80% charged when I plugged-in to charge at 9:00am. It was fully charged only by 12:15-12:30pm. This time there were no apps running and I had switched to Flight mode.

What do you mean you don't have any charging issues?? You most certainly do!!

You are supposed to be able to keep your iPad 100% fully charged while you are using it at 100% brightness,

just like any other electronic device ever made. This is certainly how the iPad 2 works, and this is certainly how the iPhone 4S works....and any other portable electronic device I've ever owned in my entire life.

Mar 21, 2012 11:10 PM in response to 4options

Furthermore, most people don't like looking at a 50% brightness, but that isn't even the point. The point is that a charger is made to charge the battery constantly so that it never drops while you are using it, but the new iPad has been tested using twice as much power as the iPad 2. If the battery in the new iPad is only 70% larger than the battery in the iPad 2 and the charger charges the battery (and the new iPad, like other devices run directly off the battery) it won't possibly be able to keep up! If the new iPad uses twice as much power as the iPad 2, it requires a battery with twice as many mAh. This is exactly why the battery keeps draining while it's plugged in and I don't even think a more powerful charger by itself would fix it. You would need a higher capacity battery as well. Maybe we will get lucky and Apple will do something creative with the battery management code and the power management to the processor and the LED light bars.

I thought I would see how long my iPad takes to charge (from 15%) I plugged it in yesterday at 3pm and it has just finished charging at 8am, so that's 17 hours on charge!!!! That can't be right. I am using the apple charger and UBS cable that came with the iPad as well, plugged into a wall socket!

I know some people are saying that because apple are pushing the product more like a laptop therefore it's going to take longer to charge, because its more like a laptop. But come one 17 hours! My MacBook pro does it in about 10 hours less!

@NolansNana

If your iPad 3 isn't charging and you are not using it heavily whilst charging and you are using the charger cable out of the box, then take it back to Apple, you obviously have a faulty unit.

Most of peoples problems here are because

1) They're trying to use a lower 5w charger cable and that isn't enough to charge the iPad

2) They're trying to plug it into the computer and charge

3) They're using the supplied 10w charger but they're also using the device heavily

Please book a Genius appointment and take it to Apple to show them, they will replace your iPad or charger whichever is deemed faulty.
