Hold down the option key while starting iTunes, then guide it to the Library.itl file on the external drive. If this is not on the external drive then it is on the internal drive and hopefully it was not part of what you got rid of when you worked on iTunes.

Similar question. I am about to deinstall iTunes because it won't open on my iMac, then reinstall it but I want to make sure I don't delete all my music files. Can you offer some guidance? I use a backup hard drive.
Removing and/or reinstalling iTunes does not affect your iTunes library or media.
I just threw away the iTunes icon (program) in applications. When I downloaded and reinstalled iTunes I did do the hold down option key while starting it up and then I navigated to my music folder and it worked perfectly.
Thank you Limnos. This took care of the issue.
