Ho do I import .iMovieTrailer file to iMovie for OSX

Hiya,
With the recent update for iMovie for iOS including more trailer styles, I have created a trailer on my iPad which I would love to edit using iMovie for OSX. So I have a bit more control and fine tuning over the trailer.

Currently the 'Scary' themed trailer is not available directly in the OSX version. Hence me starting on an iPad in the hope I can export it into the OSX version.

With a project or trailer I can press the Share to iTunes options which makes it available for me to save the project/trailer files to my desktop.

If the iMovie is a project it can be opened in the OSX version using the File --> Import --> iMovie for iOS Project

However I tried the same menu option for the trailer file and it does not work.

So a a project with the file extension .iMovieMobile is able to be imported but a trailer with the extension .iMovieTrailer can't.

Has anyone managed to import a trailer, if so I would love to hear how you do it.

Cheers,
Warren

Just a quick update.

I have even tried renaming the file extension from .iMovieTrailer to .iMovieMobile without any luck either.

It's great that the OSX version can work with projects, just a little surprised that the mac version doesn't allow to import a trailer when a project just works fine.

But even a temp solution Apple could do is to offer the same themes & trailer templates for both OSX and iOS.

If anyone has any smart ideas that would be great.

Warren

This appears to be similar to when iMovie iOS came out; origonally it took months before iMovie Mac could open iOS projects.

It's actually an iMovie Mad problem rather then an iMovie iOS issue.

So I guess we will just have to wait for an update to iMovie Mac.

Feel free to make a suggestion to Apple to get to work on it:

Hiya Thanks for that,
I have just submitted this as a suggestion using that link you sent me.

I suppose if anyone else comes across this thread, please do the following:

The more that Apple are made of aware of the issue/feature request the more likely it will get some attention.

I agree that people should go to the feedback page.

But no need to mark as also having this issue.

Apple does not respond to these forums; and for good reason, take a look at some of the weirdos in the iPhone 3.1 battery issues discussion.

So in general I think Apple considers these forums a place where people can vent, and they don't come here.

I found that the backups will onl grow in size. I suspect too that Apple is mantaining a backup of everything. Deteleted items too.

The best way to manage that is:

1. Diable the App with the wrong (bigger) size shown.

2. Perform an iCloud backup.

3. Enable the same App again.

4. Perform another bakup via iCloud.

This second backup shouldn't take that long as I suspect it will speed up the uploads for those files that match a specific hash (i.e.: same file already on thei servers). It should transfer what is still really missing.

I tried for several Apps and managed to recover lot of GBs 🙂

I have had the same problems, however, I solved the problem in the following way:

1. Create a trailer on the iPad

2. Create a new project and use the filmstrip from the trailer in the project.

3. Transfer it to iTunes followed by an import to iMovie '11

It will be imported and available for futher process.

I accept the fustration that Apple actual created programs (Apps) that will not work together so we can only hope that one day Apple will appreciate their customers and respond to their suggestions and complaints.

This is a waste of time, as you cannot edit the indivual parts.

If you want to play with the final video then skip steps 2 and 3.

Save it to your camera roll, and copy to iMovie directly.

Why waste time making a "project"?

The OP wanted to import the Trailer 'Project' so they can tweak the individual parts and layers.

Importing the final video as you suggest does not acheive this.

After hours of playing I found a solution.

I had some .imovietrailer and imoviemobile files on my mac that I could not open or play.

I could also NOT easily copy them back to my ipad to share out through itunes.

What I did in the end was airdrop them from my mac onto my ipad. This then forced the ipad to ask what app to use to open them.

I selected iMovie and voila they opened.

I could then share and export them back through iTunes and Imovie
