Thanks for your reply and thotrough explanation, Andy.
Let me go one by one.
-> 4 GB RAM is not enough to run FCP X - you may get away with very short projects but when the RAM runs out, the system will crash.
ANSWER: Minimum system requirements says 2GB of RAM (4GB of RAM recommended).- I have the recommended RAM. Not ideal, but the computer and software manufacturer says that minimum is 2 (and I have 4, which they recognize as minimum recommended), so I comply with requirements, a little better than minimum minimorum.
-> FCP X 10.0.3 runs very well on my 2009 MacPro 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 16 GB RAM and ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB.
ANSWER: I have a MacPro 8.3 2.2GHz with AMD Radeon HD 6750M, 1024 VRAM
-> First, check that you have at least 20% free space on the Hard Drive that your System and your Media, Projects and Events are on.
ANSWER: I have 164 GB free
-> Check the spec of your Mac against the system requirements:
ANSWER: Checked
- Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor or better. - I have quad-core, 2.2 GHz i7, so I'm above requirements
- 2GB of RAM (4GB of RAM recommended).- I have the recommended RAM. Not ideal, but the computer and software manufacturer says that minimum is 2 (and I have 4, which they recognize as minimum recommended), so I comply with requirements, a little better than minimum minimorum.
- OpenCL-capable graphics card or Intel HD Graphics 3000 or later - I have Intel HD Graphics 3000, so I'm OK with this
- 256MB of VRAM (512MB of VRAM recommended). - I have 1 GB, so I'm above requirements
Display with 1280-by-768 resolution or higher - I'm up to 1920x1200, so I'm above requirements
2.4GB of disk space.: I have 164 GB free, high above than minimum
-> Check the spec of your graphics card. If it's listed here, it's not suitable:
ANSWER: -Checked, all within or higher than requirements
-> If you are getting crashes, there is some conflict on the OS. Create a new (admin)user account on your system and use FCP X from there - if it runs a lot better, there's a conflict and a clean install would be recommended.
ANSWER: I created a new acconut, but looks like I have to copy all events and project, and then I would be running out of disk space.
QUESTION: Is there a way of importing events and project from my other user? If yes, then I could give this a try.
-> Keep projects to 20 mins or less. If you have a long project, work on 20 min sections then paste these into a final project for export.
ANSWER: Porject is 6 minute long only
-> Create Optimised media - most camera native files are highly compressed and need a great deal of processor power to play back - particularly if you add titles, filters or effects. ProRes 422 takes up much more hard drive space but is very lightly compressed. It edits and plays back superbly.
ANSWER: Well, this might be the answer to the problem. Media was captured from Canon 5D through iPhoto cause I don’t’have a firewire cable, and my FCPX preferences were not set to create optimized media (not realyy sure. I think it wasn't cause I needed to do some stabilization to some clips, and this option was not available, but by reimporting and checking “create optimized media”, the option became available).
Is there a way to check if media is optimized?
-> If you are short of drive space, use ProRes 422 Proxy (FCP X Preferences > Playback) - but remember to select High Quality when you export your movie.
ANSWER: I’m not short yet. I believe 164 GB free is more than enough
-> Hide Audio Waveforms at all times when you don't need them (both in Browser and Storyline / Timeline). They take up a lot of processor power. (Use the switch icon at the bottom-right of your timeline to select a format without waveforms if you don't need them at the moment, then switch back when you do).
ANSWER: I’ve being using this approach. It improves, but crashing continues.
-> Create folders in the Project and Events libraries and put any projects you are not working on currently, in those folders. This will help a lot.
ANSWER: That’s the way I work. With only one project at a time, all others invisble to FCPX.
-> Move your Projects and Events to an external HD (make sure it's formatted OS Extended - with journaled on or off) and run from there.
ANSWER: In what way would this help?
-> The biggest single improvement I saw in performance was when I upgraded the RAM from 8 GB to 16.
ANSWER: I agrre, and I'm sure it will be much better. But whenApple says 2 GB, recommended 4 GB. I might run slow, but crashing is something else - so I'm afraid I'll run faster, but crash will continue.
QUESTION: In this respect, I see a lot of people - really A LOT - complaining of crashes. Is there anybody, with more than 4 GB RAM, having the same problem, or everybody who has this problem all run 4 GB or less?
Reagarding Lion x Snow Leopard x FCPX, does anybody else have the same experience?
Again, ths a lot for your help
