My laptop connects to my imac's wi-fi network even though I have the wi-fi
status as "off" in system preferences>network. If I have it off, how can my laptop connect and use
the network?

Because your laptop is connecting to the "network". It's not connecting to your iMac. Unplug your router and you'll see that the laptop nolonger connects.
Do you use a wireless router in your network? For instance, a Time Capsule? Or Airport Extreme? Or Airport Express?

Not to be difficult, but why have an "On-off" option in sys-prefs>network if it works wheather I have it in either position?
Not using Time capsule, Air Express or Extreme. Just a wired system to the imac using DSL to the imac.
It give you the choice of allowing that computer to connect to the network or not. The iMac is not the network, it's simply a computer that can connect to the network. As Radiation Mac is saying your wireles router is broadcasting your network signal.
Then again.....try going to the sharing preference pane and see what you can find there.

Sometimes it seems like voodo, but I'm glad you've got it sorted out. You should be sure to password protect your network with a strong password to keep uninvited guests from accessing your signal.
