Problem installing iTunes 10.6 on Windows XP

I'm trying to install iTunes 10.6, but I get this error message every time:

"There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."

When I try to install the new version, it goes through the whole process of copying files, validating install, etc., but I get the error message at the end.

I've tried downloading a fresh copy of the file from the Apple web site but that didn't help either. I still get the same error message every time I try to install iTunes 10.6. (I currently have iTunes 10.2.1.1 installed on my PC.)

How do I get the new version to install successfully?

Perhaps let's first try updating your Apple Software Update.

Launch Apple Software Update ("Start > All Programs > Apple Software Update"). Does it launch and offer you a newer version of Apple Software Update? If so, choose to install just that update to Apple Software Update. (Deselect any other software offered at the same time.)

If the ASU update goes through okay, try another iTunes install. Does it go through without the errors this time?
