Can you stop 'Recent Searches' from appearing in a new tab in Safari?

Whenever I hit the + to create a new tab in Safari, the cursor goes to the search field in the new tab, and up pops my recent search history for all to see.

I was showing off my new iPad in a work meeting and my search history kept presenting itself. Last night a friend and I were looking up beers at a bar, so that was the entirety of what was seen. Could have been worse, like 'foot fungus cures' etc...

Any way to stop this?

Settings/ Safari/ Private Browsing/ ON

That will prevent all history from being logged, which may have downsides if you use history to re-visit sites.

You should be able to clear it via Settings > Safari > Clear History, and the close Safari completely and your search history should be empty when you re-open it (though you will also lose all your open tabs) : from the home screen (i.e. not with the Safari app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Safari app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
