Streaming audio only via Apple TV (2nd Generation)

Hi,

I have a question. I have an Apple TV (2nd Generation), an iPhone 4, and an iPad 2. I would like to able to stream audio to my Apple TV WITHOUT having my tv on. I have an Onkyo TX-SR606 receiver. The apple tv is plugged in directly to the receiver via HDMI. However, when I am only streaming audio I would like to stream via the optical output of the apple tv instead of the HDMI connection. Is this possible? I also have the optical output plugged into my receiver as well. When using airplay to only stream audio, it is VERY hit or miss whether or not it plays. I usually always get audio and video if using airplay with that functionality.

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

AppleTV 2, Windows 7

So my TV HAS to be on in order to stream audio? I have streamed audio only through the Apple TV using airplay without having the tv on, but it is just really hit or miss... so this CANNOT be done? Before I bought it, I wanted to make sure that this functionality was supported so I asked several Apple employees and they all told me it could be done... I just haven't gotten it to work really well
