3rd Gen iPad model numbers?

Perhaps someone could shed light on something I noticed - I looked at the model numbers of the types of the 64GB 3rd Gen iPads and was wondering why all the white models and only the AT&T WiFi+4Gs are designated differently (eg MD-prefixed instead of MC-prefixed) Aren't the MD models typically newer or more updated, or is this simply an arbitrary numbering system?

MC707LL/A Black WiFi only

MD330LL/A White WiFi only

MC756LL/A Black WiFi + Verizon 4G

MD365LL/A White WiFi + Verizon 4G

MD368LL/A Black WiFi + AT&T 4G (as well as those released outside the US)

MD371LL/A White WiFi + AT&T 4G

iPad, iOS 5.1

According to the EveryMac.com web site, here are the various model numbers.

Apple iPad 3rd Gen (Wi-Fi Only) 16, 32, 64 GB

MC705LL/A refers to the 16 GB configuration in black. The 32 GB and 64 GB configurations in black are MC706LL/A and MC707LL/A, respectively. The 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB configurations in white are MD328LL/A, MD329LL/A, and MD330LL/A, respectively.

Apple iPad 3rd Gen (Wi-Fi/4G LTE AT&T/GPS) 16, 32, 64 GB

MD366LL/A refers to the 16 GB configuration in black. The 32 GB and 64 GB configurations in black are MD367LL/A and MD368LL/A, respectively. The 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB configurations in white are MD369LL/A, MD370LL/A and MD371LL/A, respectively

Apple iPad 3rd Gen (Wi-Fi/4G LTE Verizon/GPS) 16, 32, 64 GB

MC733LL/A refers to the 16 GB configuration in black. The 32 GB and 64 GB configurations in black are MC744LL/A and MC756LL/A, respectively. The 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB configurations in white are MD363LL/A, MD364LL/A, and MD365LL/A, respectively.

Tom,

Appreciate the comprehensive model number list for the newly released 3rd Gen iPad.

However, that reinforces my query .. why are the black WiFi only models and black Verizon WiFI+4G LTE (note not any of the white WiFi only nor any of the AT&T Wifi+4G models) designated MCxxxLL/A rather than MDxxxLL/A.

Curious as I typically see newer products introduced with later prefixes (eg years ago, they were MAxxxLL/A and most of the newly released ones, including the MacBook Pros, are already MDxxxLL/A). Hope this does not imply that the black WiFi and black Verizon WiFI+4G are 'older' hardware, based on the MC-prefixes they were designated as for the recent iPad release.

Any ideas?

Actually, for the new iPad, there are only 3 model numbers as shown below. This is the model number that's engraved on the rear of the iPad. The "M" numbers are ordering numbers that relate to the iPad type, color and GB size.

Apple iPad 3rd Gen (Wi-Fi Only) 16, 32, 64 GB

The Wi-Fi Only iPad 3 configurations are assigned model number A1416

Apple iPad 3rd Gen (Wi-Fi/4G LTE AT&T/GPS) 16, 32, 64 GB

The Wi-Fi/4G LTE AT&T/GPS iPad 3 configurations are assigned model number A1430

Apple iPad 3rd Gen (Wi-Fi/4G LTE Verizon/GPS) 16, 32, 64 GB

The Wi-Fi/4G LTE Verizon/GPS iPad 3 configurations are assigned model number A1403

Not sure, but I believe if you get a refurbished iPad, the A is replaced with a DK.

i bought new iPad 3rd generation wifi + cellular 64 GB White model in south Korea today but found the model no. A1430 and part no. is PD371KH/A. i can not understand from above post that MCXXXLL/A and MDXXXLL/A in the model number. what stands for PDXXXKH/A in my Device? Is there anyone to make it clear for me?

Actually it is amazing that Apple does not have a COMPLETE LIST in their web sites (iPhones/iPods/iPads) of all makes & models and variants. You can BE SURE that there is a DETAILED LIST in someones Apple hands.
