The new iPad constantly losing cellular data connnection

My new iPad (3rd gen), 4G (AT&T) cannot seem to maintain a cellular data connection. The AT&T signal meter is still there (and shows 3 bars), but the "4G" disappears, and I get a "could not activate the cellular data network" error. I know it's not my location because it happens both at work and at home, and because my iPhone 4S and 1st gen iPad don't have the problem. I have already toggled cellular data on and off, restarted the iPad, reset network settings, and restarted again. No luck. Each time I restart, the connection works for about 30 seconds, and I can check my email, but then it immediately goes out again. Has anyone else had this problem?

My, my, it appears everyone who has purchased a new iPad will soon get some stupid appeasement item from Apple, [...]

Chill, not everyone but it isn't a pimple, isn't a zit but a tumour. Malignant or not, time will tell. My personal experience with this heat fiasco on the new ipad went this way.

  • 1st iPad, hot - not warm, I play IB2/Real Racing and the heat is the result. Safari is moderately warm already. Foxconn DL plant, Week 10.
  • 2nd iPad, freaking hot, leaving it at this point. Foxconn DL, Week 12.
  • 3rd iPad, reasonable temp, like 30 celcius on GTA, +/- 35 celcius on IB2, Real Racing is between GTA& IB2 for heat generation in my encounters. No doubt the iPad 2 feels cooler. Foxconn DY, Week 14. It seems like a new assembly plant.

I kept my points around the 35 celcius because it is the maximum temperature treshold the battery takes. Anything beyond 35 celcius is very likely to cause quick battery discharge.

My opinion is that if an iPad itself produces temperatures over 35 celcius, it can be 2 possibilities

1. Botched unit, exchange/return.

2. Apple didn't see this disharmony coming, therefore a design flaw.

For most of the previous products they've done and I've got (never got Macs), I salute Apple for being an assembly company that unifies components from everywhere in one solid product. Not all assembly companies like Boeing, Acer, Asus had such a good standing by far. First time Apple slipped my own expectations. If I'm considering a new Apple product in the future, I won't be joining the pre-orders, maybe not even the queues. Honestly.

Okay, let's try to track it down a bit more. I'm experiencing problems with three different carriers in Germany. Even Vodafone that was recommended by an Apple senior technician has the same problems.

Another observation is that if I use the connection continuously, I hardly lose connection. Problems mainly arise if the connection is idle. Switching between 2G and 3G does NOT seem to be an issue, nor is switching between WiFi and cellular data.

What I observe if the connection is down is that I can recognise from the speed of "reconnection" (i.e. the time until the signal strength indicator reappears) after switching mobile data off whether it works or not. If it works, econnection takes significantly longer. This may indicate that some negotiation is not performed, because ipad thinks that everything is still ok.

Just my 2 Cents.

We don't have 4G here in Switzerland and loosing cellular connection happen always when switching between 3G and EDGE (So you cannot travel with your iPad without loosing cellular connection)

I work a little across the whole country and seriously, cellular connection is not useable, i mean i would better switch it for a laptop now because the booting time to use the New iPad 3 is almost the same ...

Hopefully i don't take the train but i can just imagine the joy...

I had the iPad2 before and it has never never loosed the connection.

I mean iPads are really nice tools but at this point i cannot anymore count on it for my job...

Now, you've got me curious.

Turn off wifi (temporarily). Does connection stay stable?

Does resetting network settings in settings-->general-->Reset-->Reset Network settings help?

I think this is a dhcp issue. aka. it's trying to release and renew the ip address of the ipad and failing.

I could be wrong.

Furthermore, does going into Network, and releasing and renewing the IP address restore your connectivity?

Is it possible you can file on online support ticket with the carrier with your IMEI and ICCD numbers, so that it can get to the right person? (pardon me if that isn't the right language for your country.

You also may want to try holding down the home button and the sleep/wake button until it crashes and reboots.

Btw, resetting network settings will wipe out any wireless network passwords stored on the device. I find it to sometimes be a temporary fix if the network connection (in my case phone or voicemail) is glitchy.

P.S If any one of these methods does work, you may be able to use this to give the carrier/Apple more info.

I'll test some of these options tomorrow - although I know they won't help with the problem, the recollected data may be usefull.

I can test two different spaniard carriers and I'll do so across Madrid, where data coverage is good and the same SIMs inserted in an iPhone 4 work fine.

By the way, I did try the manually selected carrier today. It worked... this morning. The afternoon reproduced the problem: no internet connection unless the iPad is restarted.

I did talk to Apple Care by phone - they're going to change it for a new one, but we all know the fantastic success with that solution.

The phone operator said (and she seemed to believe it for real) that it's not a widespread problem and she ensured me that it must be a hardware issue that is going to be solved replacing the device.

We obviously disagree.

Anyway I'm going to replace it, let's see what happens next - but before that I'll make some test tomorrow.

As I've mentioned earlier (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3816436?answerId=18159184022#18159184022) I've got mine working by only enabling either cellular or wifi, never both at the same time.

And I'm using it a lot while traveling, now for a week without a drop or a single restart!

It's not a permanent fix but until apple figures out what to do at least it works and it's stable.

I used to restart it at least 3-4 times a day..

@Sam_Katz1

Turning off WiFi doesn't help.

Resetting network helps temporarily, but as you said, it wipes all settings and is cumbersome.

Total reset (holding both switches) helps temporarily, but is a PITA.

I had two service calls with Apple, without success. I cannot try sending my IMEI because everything is already packed for return.

I have my sim pin disabled since minute #1 (I HATE pins and locks!).

This doesn't change anything. The problem persists and I'm still convinced that the switch between 2G and 3G is the culprit.

This is "demonstrated" by the fact that in my country (Italy) and in other countries too where the "3" operator is present, having one of their sims in the new iPad doesn't produce any problem.

"3" has NO 2G service. Either you are under their (spotty) coverage in 3G or you don't, but there's no switchover 2G/3G whatsoever.

My humble opinion is that the new 4G modem in the new iPad has the same driver (kext) as the previous tried and true one, but it would need a revised one (obviously... Being a different beast).

At least you don't mention a wifi problem, in Greece where I live I bought two new iPads one for me and one for my girlfriend we live together. Wifi is weak the connection is always messy and no answer from nowhere we have no apple store ingreece I don't know in Italy what happens but here I just cannot use them, I have tried everything, my router is working properly and all of my devices in my house are very cooperative with this router, the apple ***** do not, neither in free wi fi in public places they keep losing connection
