The new iPad constantly losing cellular data connnection

My new iPad (3rd gen), 4G (AT&T) cannot seem to maintain a cellular data connection. The AT&T signal meter is still there (and shows 3 bars), but the "4G" disappears, and I get a "could not activate the cellular data network" error. I know it's not my location because it happens both at work and at home, and because my iPhone 4S and 1st gen iPad don't have the problem. I have already toggled cellular data on and off, restarted the iPad, reset network settings, and restarted again. No luck. Each time I restart, the connection works for about 30 seconds, and I can check my email, but then it immediately goes out again. Has anyone else had this problem?

Here in Germany I finally made it up with one of Germanys most reputable newspapers, the "F.A.Z" ("Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung") to publish about iPad3 and Apples absolute inacceptable behaviour this weekend on paper and in its internet presence (need link? google for "frankfurter allgemeine zeitung techtalk").

They already asked Apple for a press statement related to this behave. Apple denied to comment; a behave which usually let them switch on their printing press as reflex action to let Apple publicly read what they have to tell them and to what they want a statement... 🙂

Tried to get golem, heise etc. to move as well. Golem responded that they keep a eye on it 😕, heise feign death (the Apple method)...➖➖➖

Maybe this will get Apple back into the pit.

I have the same problem with IPAD3/Deutsche Telekon Multi SIM, the ipad was unable to link to the internet even if the cellular network streght is high. Turning off and restart helps, but if I loose network connection (eg while travelling in train or connecting to a WLAN) the problem is back. Yesterday I went to a Telekom Shop, but they said they never heared about that problem. I got a new SIM Card, but the problem remain.

I have used the same SIM card in my IPAD2 and never had such problems.

Ok, so I went to Apple - Regent Street today for my Genius appointment. I was given 2 options delete and full restore (including firmware, which may be important) or a replaced unit. Given that if the firmware restore doesnt work then I am entitled to a replacement, I took the pragmatic route and went for the restore.

I have got the Vodafone sim installed which previously got the Ipads knickers in a twist when it moved between 3G and 2G areas. So far it has transitioned through both without issue. I will keep an eye on it and update as necessary.

Still no acknowledgement from Apple that they have any sort of issue here. Maybe a fix was hidden in the firmware restore or maybe its just magic.

Watch this space (unless you are Apple of course)

This is perfect. We should all this this in our countries.

I am suffering from this issue since day 1 when I had received my iPad 3. And I know from Apple employees who suffer from the same issue.

Maybe it's time to put pressure to Apple via Media involvement globally. This is no longer just a product issue but rather an arrogant behaviour of "no communication" which is not acceptable.

How I resolved this issue.

4 days work-home-airport-underground-car without reboot.

Before I was loosing connection 4-5 times a day.

Please do precisely as described below.

1. Your sim card has to be inside your iPad. (wifi + 3G both on)

2. You have to be in 3G covered zone.

3. Your pin code has to be switched off. Do not reenable it!

4. Your security code has to be switched off. Do not reenable it!

5. Your Mac/PC has to be connected to Internet.

5. Connect your iPad to iTunes. Backup and then restore your iPad usin iTines.

iTunes will download files from Apples servers. You will lost your previously

installed programs but not your contacts etc.

6. If asked to update sim provider firmware answer yes.

7. Setup your iPad as for the first time.(do not reenable security codes)

8. Voila!

P.s. Usually people are buying new iPad, switching it on and than buying a new sim card.

I think the problem occurs if you install your 3G/2G capable sim card in your iPad after you've done initial setup.

Probably you have to switch on your iPad for the first time with a sim card inside it.

Hi ANTONeo,

I have tried that but it still fails to fix the issue. During the restore it does note shows if I want to update the provider firmware. I am guessing that it is country/carrier specific.

One interesting note is that since my SIM card works on two different APN, when the problem occurs I can switch to the second APN and it will continue to work again. But, on the next failure I would have to reboot since both APN would not be working anymore.

Folks...

I'm sorry to tell you, but the problem is some layers below what we can intervene on...

There's no trick to overcome a problem in how the ipad handshakes with the WWAN.

We have to wait for Apple to release a new iOS, with a NEW modem driver. Full stop.

The problem lies in the switchover from 2G to 3G and vice versa.

Stick a 3G only sim in your iPad and you'll NEVER face this failure again.

Let it move from 3G to EDGE and you'll easily fall prey of the dreaded inability to activate cellular network...

There's no trick or magic that will save us. Probably inserting an APN that limits the service to 3G on our current networks could save our days, but this would just confirm that the switchover to 2G is the core culprit...

Me, I've moved to "3" in Italy since weeks (moving away from Wind, but I know that Vodafone and Tim in my country behave the same, as they have and support EDGE/GPRS). I'm not endorsing 3 in any way, as I don't like their spotty coverage in my country, but for the moment I'm sticking to their 3G only network to keep my connection going while on the move.

Since this move, I've NEVER EVER had ANY failure. Not a single one!
