Q: The new iPad constantly losing cellular data connnection

My new iPad (3rd gen), 4G (AT&T) cannot seem to maintain a cellular data connection.  The AT&T signal meter is still there (and shows 3 bars), but the "4G" disappears, and I get a "could not activate the cellular data network" error.  I know it's not my location because it happens both at work and at home, and because my iPhone 4S and 1st gen iPad don't have the problem.  I have already toggled cellular data on and off, restarted the iPad, reset network settings, and restarted again.  No luck.  Each time I restart, the connection works for about 30 seconds, and I can check my email, but then it immediately goes out again. Has anyone else had this problem?

Apple denied they called it's not on my case number? I must be crazy? Who wants to here the recording email me.

However that the 3g is not working and 3g is working with the att sim is the following reasen apple advisor told me.

1st time they hear about this fyi

-why ipad 3g doesn't work on 3g network(ipad not compatible with 3g network, i said check specs umts or edge ipad2 and ipad 3 same specs, you'r right, but they are 2 different devices)

-Simard not compatible with ipad 3(my question why does the local card work in ipad2, answer 2 different devices)

-simcard not good you need an lte simcard, sir we don't have lte here i just want 3g, shouldn't a normal 3g sim card work. What sim card do i need then sir? Apple: i don't know.

-have you tired restoring, yes sir. Then he saw that under my case

-why does an other provider have no service and works in the ipad 2. Answer that is very weird

-sir have you check apple discussion forum? Apple: no it's not modarted by apple.

Apple: I could only say there is one the following problems(apple advisor said)

    -software problem

    -hardware problem

    -sim card bot compatible

-network not compatabile(sir rember 3g on the same network works with att roming sim card)

Sir(apple) all i see is that any ipad with 3g problems we have to get our hand on. When are u back in the states

So i can make an appointment so i can bring the ipad to an apple store.

I told them i will send it with somebody and write all the tests i did.

I wonder if there is note out to apple stores ect to get there hands on ipads that have 3g problems????

My serial is DMPH bought 16 march at best buy

    Very said!

Do you know the frequency that your carrier operates? Can you find out what kind of sim card you have? Data only? Normal 3g that works in a phone? Do you see view account at cellular data?

    (In response to CalvinBaank)

Yeah it's the normal phone 3G service. I don't know about the frequency.

    Hi to all,

I would share with you my experience from Italy. I have your same problem with the new Ipad 4G LTE+wifi 16GB.

In Italy we have three mobile carriers, TIM, Vodafone, H3G. The first and the second can manage GPRS, EDGE and 3G networks. The third operator only 3G Network. I have TIM SimCard. Often during day with full power of 3G signal my Ipad doesn't connect to internet with error messages "Could Activate mobile data network" or "Cannot Open Page, Safari cannot open the page because it is not connected to the internet". I tried to switch off in Airplane Mode and reactivates it but the problem is still present. The solution is to restart the Ipad.

It seems that the problem is related to the switch from EDGE to 3G. With the third operator H3G in fact the problem doesn't happen (EDGE is not provided).

Some Italian users have already changed 2 or 3 New Ipad but the problem persist. This situation is very sad because i used the Ipad for work and often when i need the internet connection to download Email i can't do it. I have to restart the Ipad...

I hope that Apple recognises the problem and solve it in some way...

I wondered if it was possible it was caused from switching (or trying to switch) from 4G to 3G. When I was having the issue previously I noted it didn't really happen at work or home, but when I was out away from those areas (and often in the car while moving) - that was when it would happen.

I'm on my third unit first one doa for wifi instability

Second one 3G instability serial dlxh

Third same issue dn6h. This is my first iPad I'm starting to feel ripped off. I was told it is a known issue with a few units.

Wish it worked like my iPhone does. I got my issue narrowed to when I'm hooked to wifi and I leave wifi area it didn't reconnect to service. When I turn wifi off manually and leave same area it works fine. Or if I don't turn wifi on and come and go from home for instance. Is this just me or is it like that for others?

This is strange. The other Apple discussion forum regarding this similar problem with iPad 3rd gen wireless connectivity issues has a dead link now, https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3842662?start=75&tstart=0

I hope this means Apple has become very aware of this and will issue software update to fix soon.

I posted earlier how I had this problem but now the issue seem to be ok.

My iPad was fine first week. Then it started having wireless connectivity problems. Then I tried many reboots, restart network settings and entered in carrier APN settings manually. None of this worked at first. Then it just seemed to work all of a sudden.  It has continued to work seamlessly switching from wifi to 3G/4g but the signal is not as strong as my iPhone 4s.  So even though it works I think Apple can release an software update to improve wireless signal.

Like many others I hope it's not a hardware issue.  Has anyone exchanged for new physical iPad for another and can verify this fixed the issue after testing??

@sir_kw are you outside the usa? Are you on a 3g only network?
