ITunes Quits when opened

The other day I was going to sync my IPod with my music library using ITunes. I opened ITunes and it requested I download an update and install which I did. The program was working correctly. I had downloaded some new music and saved it to My Music folder and because ITunes doesn’t automatically update it music library based on the changes I made to My Music folder. I had to manually add the folders. ITunes analyzed the folders and started Determining Gapless Playback Information and it came up with the error window:

"A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.

Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

Now, every time I try to open ITunes it gives me the same error.

What have I tried?

1) I tried restarting the PC.

2) I rolled back to a restore point a couple of days earlier (before glitch and before install of new ITunes) and tried open the program again. Same error;

3) Did a complete uninstall and re-install as per apple website (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923) - I did the right order of everything, went through and did the verifying that everything is deleted etc. I downloaded the absolute newest ITunes 64 bit for the new install. Still comes up with the error upon startup;

4) As per http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1363?viewlocale=en_US I have tried doing the "Disable conflicting System Services and Startup Items" and even with almost nothing running, when I start up iTunes, it says that not all components required for operation are available, do you want iTunes to repair... to which I say yes... then it tries to start up ITunes and fails... again.

5) As per https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2600089 this is a copy of the problem report.

The iTunes.dll result usually indicates a Windows-user-account-specific issue ... but which sort of user-specific issue is open to question. (In context, the point at which the crash first hit might point towards a library file or content file issue, though.)

Probably the the best way to proceed with it would be to work through the following document:

Add me to the list having this problem also. I've tried to do everything also listed above plus trying to install as administrator, turning off the Firewalls and antivirus softare plus many more ideas I've seen on a Google search. The program stops when the indicator bar at the top of the application is at 50% while "Accessing the iTunes store".

Surely there is someone with Apple who knows what the problem is and can take us thru the steps to fix it. HELP us please!!!

Resolution

(Done, same error) Start iTunes in Safe Mode

Open iTunes in Safe Mode to isolate any inference with plug-ins or scripts not manufactured by Apple.

1.Hold down the Shift and Control keys while opening iTunes. If performed correctly, you should see a dialog that says "iTunes is running in safe mode" before iTunes finishes starting up.

2.After clicking Continue, determine whether the issue you were experiencing persists in Safe Mode.

If you see the same issue while iTunes is in Safe Mode, proceed to the Create a New User Account section below. If you do not experience the same issue, consult iTunes: Troubleshooting issues with third-party iTunes plug-ins for steps on how to remove third-party plug-ins.

(Done, same error) Create a New User Account

When troubleshooting a variety of issues, it can be useful to determine if the issue affects a specific Windows user account or all accounts. Follow the steps below to create a new user account in Windows Vista or Windows 7:

1.From the Start menu, choose Control Panel.

  1. 2.Open Add or remove user accounts (If using the Classic View in Windows Vista, open User Accounts. Then open Manage another account).
  2. 3.Select Create a new account and follow the instructions to complete the account setup process.
  3. 4.Once the new account is created, choose Log Off from the Start menu.
  4. 5.Log into the newly created user account.
  5. 6.Open iTunes and determine whether the issue you were experiencing persists in this new user.

If you see the same issue in the newly created user account, proceed to the System-wide troubleshooting section below. If you do not experience the same issue, consult the User-specific troubleshooting section below.

(Determined it was a system-wide problem)

System-wide troubleshooting

When troubleshooting system-wide issues with iTunes, there are a few different suggestion to try.

(Done, same error) ■Check for viruses

Windows viruses can interfere with a variety of computer functions including iTunes. Make sure that you have current anti-virus software installed with updated virus definitions and use it to scan your system.

(Done, same error) ■Check for anti-virus and/or Internet security software

Internet Security software itself can sometimes cause iTunes to quit unexpectedly. Try disabling the Internet Security software temporarily or exempting iTunes from any active scanning done by such software. If this resolves the issue, check with the maker of the software for an update to the software or its virus definitions. See the following article for more information: iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting security software issues.

(Done, same error) ■Conflicting processes

Sometimes other programs and startup items can conflict with iTunes, look at the following article to troubleshoot such conflicts:

Using MSCONFIG to troubleshoot conflicts in Windows Vista and Windows 7

(Could not find files to delete, Same error) ■Removing iTunes configuration files

Removing unusable configuration files that iTunes uses can resolve launch issues. See "iTunes for Windows Vista or Windows 7 doesn't open after upgrading" for information.

(Done, Same error) ■Check the iTunes and QuickTime installations

An improper installation of iTunes or QuickTime can contribute to a variety of issues. Follow the article below to learn how to completely reinstall iTunes and QuickTime:

Trouble installing iTunes or QuickTime software in Windows

Also did a complete system wash of all Apple and ITunes entries in the registry using regedit to locate a delete all entries. Same error.

Walk us through that one in a bit more detail, please. Was the SC Info folder empty? Or was something different going on?

I am having the same problem. I downloaded the newest version of Itunes, and now as soon as I try to do anything in Itunes I get the "A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.

Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." error message. I am completely computer illiterate, so all that stuff above means nothing to me. Does anyone have a fix for this that I would understand? Step by step please! Thank you so much in advance!!

I was using the work around stated below:

"Ok.. It seems that iTunes only crashes when it starts determining gapless playback information..

If I am quick enough to cancel the process, iTunes does not crash.."

I had plenty of time to cancel the operation (ITunes wouldn't crash until it got over 400).

I was setting up the Genius option in ITunes and it got to the screen with the three steps.

It got though the first step (gathering information), but.

ITunes crashed (same error) during the 2nd step (sending Information to Apple).

Now when I open it crashes before it gets to 10 (Not enough time to cancel the operation)

I am having the same problem, I think. However, mine is user-specific - so when I created a new user account on this danged Vista machine I can get iTunes to open. I then went back to the original user account and tried:

Remove iTunes Preference files

Some of the files that iTunes uses to store settings and preferences may be unusable and cause issues. iTunes has two folders where preferences are saved. Move one of them to the desktop and test to see if the issue persists. If it does, move it back and remove the second folder. The location for the two preference folders are:

  • C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\iTunes
  • C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes

I got nowhere with this, the Local folder wouldn't let me make the move. It seemed to get hung up. The Roaming folder move didn't accomplish anything.

Isn't there some way I can transfer the library to the new user account? Since I can't open iTunes in the original user account I don't know how I'm going to get any of my music or apps.

If your music is in your Music folder.

You can add the music frrom your original profile

1. Open new account.

2. Open ITunes.

3. Click on File.

4. Select Add Folder(s).

5. Select Computer, C;, User, (old account), My Music or select were your music is stored in your profile.

6. Select the first folder or file.

7. Type CTRL A.

8. Click on the Open button.

I have done this and ITunes quit working after I added the folders.
